Photonics Application Engineer

Within the Office of the CTO, the Photonics Platforms Business is a pioneer in the manufacturing and commercialization of nano-photonic devices. We are harnessing the power of Applied Material’s world-leading material science and nano-fabrication capabilities to enable the next generation of photonic devices.

We are seeking a full-time Photonics Application Engineer with experience engaging with customers, optical modeling, and prototyping optical systems to enable a new generation of AR products utilizing our photonics devices.

Candidates must have excellent technical communication skills, optical design experience, hands-on lab experience, familiarity with optical materials and fabrication methods, and be willing to travel. Previous experience working on product development, and familiarity with optical and mechanical design tools are advantageous. Successful candidates must work well in cross-functional teams to respond to customer and partner issues and develop solutions.

Job Function:

Engage with customers to communicate waveguide technical informationUnderstand customers’ unique waveguide integration challengesCommunicate customer waveguide integration challenges to required internal teamsCommunicate to customer technical solutions, tradeoffs, testing plans regarding waveguide integrationData analysis of metrology data relevant to customer inquiriesGenerate standard documentationApplication NotesApplication Hardware Guide for Waveguide IntegrationOperate demos for some customers and partnersLead customer Technical review meetingsMust travel frequently with short noticeMust be available for customer support outside typical working hours

Key Qualifications

BS or equivalent in optics, physics, photonics, or related fieldExcellent inter-personal skills (must interact with external customers, external partners, and all internal teams)Excellent technical communication skillsExcellent technical writing skillsPrior experience in a customer facing rolePrior experience in optical design (refractive, diffractive, and/or polarization optics)Prior experience in an optical lab environmentFamiliar with optical metrology methods and metricsFamiliar with optical materials (glasses, crystals, thin films, adhesives, etc)Familiar with waveguide manufacturing processes (Deposition methods, Dry Etch, Wet Etch, NIL, Photolithography, Dicing, Edge Blackening)Familiar with physical metrology methods (SEM, TEM, Elemental Analysis, CDSEM, AFM, etc)

MS or equivalent in optics, physics, photonics, or related fieldFluent in MandarinExperience with optical design software (FDTD, FEM, RCWA, etc)Experience with MATLAB, Python, JMPExperience with 3D CAD tools

U.S. Salary Range:

$124,000.00 - $171,000.00

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
