Responsibilities You will identify deviations from normal or anticipated radiation levels to determine if the deviations are transient, instrument is defective, shielding has moved, or equipment or area has higher than expected radiation levels. You will monitor requirements for controlling radiation in storage, decontamination, and control points of activity. You will perform and interpret air, water, and surface radiation surveys. You will maintain surveillance over contaminated tool, equipment, and storage areas. You will maintain required Shipyard and radiological control technician qualifications as directed. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for the GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: conducting radiation control surveillance of activities, personnel, or materials to ensure radiological control inspection requirements are appropriately recorded, maintained, and met. To qualify for the GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least 6 months of general experience in physical science or a related field, and 6 months of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: performing basic radiological control checks to ensure results of analysis or documented procedures performed are correctly recorded in accordance with standardized procedures and operations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education The following education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows: For the GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with a major study in an appropriate field of physical science or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics. For the GS-04: Successful completion of 2 years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics. Additional Information This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. Vacancies filled from this announcement may be filled at any grade level listed. If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management.
