Position Summary:
The Therapist Physical Resident (P.T.R.) promotes and restores patient health using the delivery of medically prescribed physical therapy to restore function and facilitate rehabilitation of the physically impaired following disease, injury, or surgical intervention. Using evidence-based practices and industry standards, the P.T.R. will evaluate the patient’s need for therapy, develop a plan of care to include objective goals, and implement a treatment program for improvement of physical or developmental dysfunction. The P.T.R. will direct patient participation in selected tasks to improve mobility and participation in functional daily activities, increase strength and neuromuscular control, restore, reinforce and enhance performance, facilitate learning of skills and functions necessary for adaptation and productivity. The P.T.R. will communicate regularly with the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) to discuss the patient’s progress toward goals and changes in patient status. The P.T.R. will educate and instruct the patient, family, and designated others in home programming and appropriate preventive measures. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
* MISCELLANEOUS - Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
* POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
* PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through enrollment and participation in a Physical Therapy residency training program through The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Division of Physical Therapy or other approved academic Residency Program; activities required by the academic residency program, other than clinical work assignments at UNMH/SRMC, will be defined by that entity separately from this job description
* EDUCATION - Educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops with SRMC
* ETHICS - Maintains and adheres to the values outlined in the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) code of ethics
* EVALUATE - Evaluates and assesses functional impairments using established standards and identifies appropriate intervention and therapy needs
* TREATMENT - Plan, prepare, execute, and supervise individualized programs of treatment to restore and improve physical functioning, alleviate pain, or prevent physical impairments in patients
* PATIENT CARE - Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; by following standards of care set governing agency regulations
* TREATMENT - Establishes a clinical impression and patient problem list for patients with wide variety of injury or disease processes with appropriate indications/contraindications for treatment in order to implement and execute an appropriate individualized treatment plan
* PATIENT CARE - Educates patients, family, and caregivers to plan of care, patient progress, and planning for discharge to include the development of a home management/exercise program
* STRATEGIES - Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies
* SAFETY - Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
* SAFETY - Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols
* DOCUMENT - Documents patient care services in a timely manner by charting in patient and department records
* COMMUNICATION - Maintains continuity among multidisciplinary teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs
* COLLABORATION - Collaborates with the healthcare team, implementing and documenting individualized plans of care incorporating age specific considerations and nursing interventions, including discharge planning and patient/family teaching
* GOALS - Contributes and participate in team huddles to identify barriers and obstacles and in support of realigning processes toward organizational and department goals
* PARTICIPATION - Participates in the hiring, orientation, precepting, evaluation, and/or retention of co-workers
* MENTORSHIP - Participate as a mentee in planned and organized patient care mentorship provided by a qualified PT mentor from UNMH/SRMC Physical Therapy staff for 4 hours per week in accordance with the contracted Residency Program guidelines
* DOCUMENTATION - Complete documentation and billing activities within established time standards; document all patient care activities; process patient billing; complete insurance documentation as required
* CUSTOMER/STAFF RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospital employees
* SUPERVISION - Supervise and instruct Physical Therapy students, Physical Therapy assistant students, Rehabilitation Techs and Volunteers as delegated; delegate patient treatment responsibilities to ancillary staff as appropriate

Physical Conditions:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
