The successful candidate:

City of Hope Chicago in Zion, IL is seeking a Chief Clinical Officer.  The Chief Clinical Officer, City of Hope Chicago will serve as the most senior clinical leader in the region guiding clinical care decision-making across all clinical care locations including the hospital and network. 

POSITION SUMMARY

The position is responsible for establishing physician culture and efficiency in practice across the region.

The Chief Clinical Officer, City of Hope Chicago serves as a key partner in the development and implementation of clinical research in the region.

The Chief Clinical Officer ensures compliance with all clinical, research, academic, quality, and safety goals and standards. 

Additional accountabilities related to administrative leadership and the achievement of City of Hope’s goals and strategies. 

Lead, in partnership with the appropriate Department Chairs at City of Hope, physician recruitment, care model development and implementation, quality/patient safety issues, and patient experience for all City of Hope Chicago sites across the region. 

The Chief Clinical Officer will serve as a key member of the Entity President’s Executive Leadership Team and City of Hope System Physician Executive’s Leadership Team.

Effectively manage administrative duties and clinical practice, role modeling clinical leadership, patient-centered care, and physician community building.

LEADERSHIP & STRATEGY

Works with leadership to ensure that the highest standards of clinical care and clinical research services are delivered consistently. 

Provides clinical and research expertise to the development of strategic growth plans for City of Hope Chicago

Coordinates to develop and implement across all locations the standards pertaining to quality/patient safety and care coordination conducting any quality assurance, utilization review, educational and risk management programs.

Works collaboratively and in partnership with leadership, nursing, operational, community network as well as department/center/institute leaders to support and achieve the strategic goals of the system and City of Hope Chicago.

Accountability for performance of City of Hope Chicago physicians against established metrics for clinical productivity, research, and contributions to the outreach. 

Provide detailed input to the President and appropriate Chairs in the evaluation and promotion decisions of City of Hope Chicago physicians.

Oversees compliance with standards and requirements of licensing and accrediting agencies for City of Hope Chicago, participates in developing and implementing standards pertaining to regulatory compliance that supports and facilitates the integration with system clinical, research, quality, and educational activities. 

Ensures appropriate physician coverage for all clinical services across the region.

Assists in developing communication plans for ensuring consistency in institutional messaging to the City of Hope Chicago physicians.

Oversees the implementation of enterprise/service line clinical pathways and protocols across all City of Hope Chicago locations.

Provides necessary support and guidance to CIS (clinical information systems) in the development of order sets and other features in the electronic medical record system. 

Responsible for leading the development of workflows and creation of an effective and efficient care model supportive of patient experience and provider engagement. 

ADMINISTRATION

Leads budgeting and planning for areas of responsibility. Ensures assigned areas meet all annual and long-term operational and capital budget targets.

Works collaboratively with administrative/operational/nursing leaders to identify opportunities to improve patient quality/safety/experience, operate more efficiently, identify, and pursue revenue generating and cost reduction opportunities.

Provides input and assists in the preparation and presentation of operational reports, including budgetary and strategic planning as needed.

Supports philanthropy efforts within the City of Hope Chicago region in partnership with System Philanthropy team.

Provides management oversight for City of Hope Chicago physicians including physician engagement, culture, physician wellbeing, behavior management.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Participates as needed in business development opportunities that will lend support to achieving the City of Hope Chicago goals.

Supports physicians in the development of outreach efforts and identification of outreach opportunities.

Attends potential future location site visits, welcome events as attendee, and speaks at welcome and open house events.

Communicates/collaborates with media relations on media opportunities and community events that can highlight regional programs, services & sites.

Actively engages with non-COH physicians in the region building relationships and educating community physicians on City of Hope Chicago programs and services.

PHYSICIAN RECRUITMENT

Coordinates with Entity President, System Physician Executive and Department Chairs in the long-term planning and responsible for recruitment of physicians who will practice across the City of Hope Chicago region. 

Utilizes network to assist in the identification of potential physician candidates and involved in the selection process (e.g., reviewing CVs (Curriculum Vitae), interviewing, providing feedback, gathering information from network on physician reputation, recommendations for hire/salary/TAR, etc.). 

Thoughtfully and effectively on-boards new physicians into City of Hope Chicago. 

Partner with physician organization and medical group on the contracting and re-contracting of physicians to serve the region.

RESEARCH & EDUCATION

Partner with the City of Hope System in the development and implementation of a clinical research growth plan to increase clinical trial offerings. 

Oversight and partnering to evolve research in the region and partner across Tgen and the system.

Plays a key role in the implementation of the system’s precision medicine strategy in the region.

Facilitates strategic relationships with physicians to advance scientific endeavors. 

Meet and collaborate effectively with internal and external teams including faculty, staff, trial investigators and administration.

Provide presentations to expand knowledge on disease states/disease teams and regular updates regarding the latest developments in therapeutic categories.

Liaise with key opinion leaders in the clinical research field to keep abreast of current trends in research and product development.

Attend and present educational material at industry meetings as a City of Hope Chicago representative.     

Support and enhance educational and training programs.

Ensure the orientation and continuing education of all physicians in the region including the identification of educational needs and opportunities.

Demonstrated experience effectively managing physician relationships and successfully managing professionals in a complex, multi-faceted healthcare clinic operation.

Demonstrated financial analysis and fiscal management skills.

Ability to think strategically and to develop and operationalize strategic and business plans in accordance with the organization’s mission.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

MD (Medical Doctor) or DO is required.  Significant clinical and administrative experience in a university or community-based health science center or comparable organization. Board-certified with a demonstrated understanding of all elements of physician management and healthcare delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations, and finance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in business, healthcare, or health administration-related discipline.

EXPERIENCE

Eight years of management experience working in a large, multi-specialty oncology practice in a medical group, medical foundation, health system, or integrated delivery network model; 5+ years of experience as a Medical Director or Physician Executive/Leader in a hospital or health system
