This vacancy is located within the Medical Services Department at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA (East Feliciana Parish). ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex comprised of residential, outpatient, and inpatient services.
Salary is negotiable based on experience.
The position is an unclassified position.

To provide medical care and emergency treatment for inpatient Forensic clients.
Supervision Received:
Direct from the Medical Director
Examples of Work
The medical physician is responsible for provision of medical care and the emergency treatment of patients on assigned unit.
Perform physical examination on all patients upon admit to facility and annually. Evaluate, diagnose, treat and follow-up medical problems on patients. Refer to medical specialists as appropriate of care. Advise Administration of special health care needs of patient population and further advise as to the requirements for contracting specialty consultations.
Physical assessment, including History, Physical and Neurological Examination, as may be required pending appropriate specialist consultation, or of inpatients in the absence of a specialist normally assigned to the care of those patients.
Laboratory assessments as may be indicated for initial evaluation, monitoring of ongoing drug treatments, or intercurrent physical disorders. Order laboratory tests, radiological studies, dental work, special diets and medications as indicated by patient's condition ,etc.
Collaboration with Medical Director and discuss patient's condition with psychiatrists and other members of the treatment team to help in the management of the most appropriate patient care.
Provides treatment directly as well as thorough consultation and/or supervision of staff in accordance with the individual treatment plan of the patient, including medication, individual, group and family psychotherapies, activity therapy and education.
Provides accurate, timely and relevant documentation of all clinical activities in order to assure acceptable individual medical records as needed to provide continuity of high quality medical care within legal and accreditation mandates.
Participates in meetings as required for regulation of clinical and/or management and quality improvement issues in the Region, and interacting with ELMHS and other providers and public service agencies (Coroner, law enforcement, etc.), such as, Medical Staff meetings, committees of the Medical Staff or of the Center or of the Region, departmental meetings, and volunteer and support groups.
Responds to legal and quasi-legal duties of Psychiatric practice, such as, initiation of various involuntary detainer and commitment proceedings, assurance that patients are protected from abuse of human and civil rights, and that confidentiality and privilege are protected, disabilities and cultural diversity are respected and provided for, and , when so appointed, to participate in reviews of refusal of medication, and assessment of persons on forensic issues and report to the court. May testify in court as a medical witness. These duties fall in all three categories of direct, consultative, and supervisory services.
Twenty -four(24) hour call duty with reimbursement in rotation with other staff physicians.
Responds to Emergencies, such as, medical assistance to persons on the premises, leadership duties during special incidents in the acute unit or clinic when orders for restraint, seclusion, medication or other disposition may be needed.
Maintains current Louisiana State licensure, DHH number and DEA number, ACLS certification. If Board Certified, maintain current certification.
Adhere to DHH, OHS, OBH, Civil Services and ELMHS rules, regulations, policies, procedures and to the legal and ethical standards of the profession.
Maintains Continuing Medical Education in order to progress with changes in the science and delivery of clinical services, and to comply with Medical Staff membership requirements.
Perform other job duties as determined by the Medical Director.
