Summary:
Vighter is recruiting multiple Physician Assistants (PA), with a specialty in Cardiothoracic care to assist cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons in the care of patients who require surgery or treatment for heart, lung, and other thoracic conditions. The PA will work at the Department of Veterans Affairs Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. The OR has 6 rooms providing services for surgical procedures including elective, urgent and emergent cases. The Salt Lake City VA is rated as a complex surgical facility, therefore provides surgical care to Veterans locally and from surrounding states. The OR staff, surgeons, technicians, nurses and anesthetists work together as a team to provide outstanding care for multiple surgical specialties.
Principle Accountabilities:
+ Conduct patient assessments and histories to evaluate their readiness for surgery.
+ Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including EKGs, chest X-rays, and lab work.
+ Assist in formulating pre-operative plans and ensuring patients understand the procedure and aftercare.
+ Assist cardiovascular or thoracic surgeons in performing surgeries, including heart bypass surgeries, valve repairs/replacements, lung resections, and other thoracic procedures.
+ Handle surgical instruments, maintain sterile fields, and assist in closing incisions.
+ Perform some minimally invasive procedures, including placing chest tubes or managing ventilators during surgeries.
+ Monitor patients in the ICU or recovery rooms following surgery, tracking vital signs and addressing any complications.
+ Manage wound care, drainage, and ensure the appropriate medication is administered.
+ Educate patients and families on post-operative care, lifestyle changes, and recovery expectations.
+ Order follow-up tests and imaging as necessary and monitor patient progress.
+ Counsel patients on cardiovascular health, prevention of heart and lung disease, lifestyle modifications (e.g., smoking cessation, diet, exercise), and managing chronic conditions.
+ Provide emotional support to patients and families, answering questions and offering guidance on treatment plans.
+ Work alongside cardiologists, pulmonologists, nurses, surgical teams, and other healthcare professionals.
+ Assist with clinical decision-making and provide input on treatment plans based on patient assessments.
+ Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for each patient, including assessments, surgical notes, and post-operative care plans.
+ Ensure compliance with hospital and legal documentation standards.
+ Stay updated on advancements in cardiothoracic surgery and medical practices.
+ Participate in ongoing education, training, and conferences related to cardiothoracic care.
+ Occasionally contribute to clinical research or quality improvement projects.
Knowledge and Skills :
+ Must have exceptional customer service skills.
+ Employees shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements, including ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently.
+ Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment with limited supervision
+ Excellent organizational, scheduling and prioritization skills.
Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
Qualifications:
+ Education: Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
+ Licensure: State licensure as a Physician Assistant.
+ Certifications: Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS) certifications are typically required. Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) prior to performing any work.
+ Excellent problem-solving skills with a willingness to adapt and innovate as needed.
+ Effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams and convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:
+ The expected duty hours for this position are 8 hours per day and 5 days per week. However, this key position supporting 24/7/365 operations which may require work to be conducted in the day, at night, on weekends, and during holidays.

Physical Requirements :
+ Must be able to sit for more than 8 hours per day, must be willing to work overtime if necessary.
+ Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs.
+ Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 10 feet.
+ Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
+ Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
+ Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
+ Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment
+ Must undergo Urine Drug Screening (UDS).
