Summary Serve as a non- invasive Cardiologist evaluating, diagnosing, providing consultation, treating, and managing inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of acute, chronic and/or suspected diseases. Participate in education of trainees. Actively engage in basic, clinical, or health services research in cardiovascular disease. Responsibilities DUTIES: Incumbent will be a member of the Cardiology Section/Medical Service and will participate in patient care, teaching and administrative activities of the Division, as assigned. They will function as an independent physician provider, and they will provide medical care in the spectrum of their field of Cardiology in all aspects of patient care including in patient/outpatient care. The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to inpatient and outpatient care of patients with cardiovascular disease, performance of non-invasive and invasive cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic procedures consistent with training, experience, and professional privileges; instructing, supervising, and mentoring cardiovascular trainees in clinical and research activities; conducting approved investigator-initiated and/or collaborative Cardiovascular research; participating in the academic programs and activities of the Division of Cardiology, CU School of Medicine. Providing patient care in the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. Incumbent will attend on the inpatient consult service, outpatient clinic and other clinical services covered by the Cardiology Section. These clinical responsibilities may include patient care activities with or without trainees. Teach medical students, interns and residents in Internal Medicine and fellows in Cardiology. Participate in the educational activities oh the Division of Cardiology, University of Colorado Denver. Participate in Process Improvement/Quality Assurance projects and other administrative duties as assigned, including Cardiology Section meetings. Lead or collaborate in basic, clinical, or health services research in the field of cardiovascular disease. Other duties as assigned by the Chief, Cardiology Section. Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Cardiology as well as in the inpatient wards and emergency department. The Physician will evaluate, triage consultation for inpatient and outpatient the Cardiology subspecialty. They will obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, recommend, order, and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment for patients. The incumbent will coordinate medical management and care within their discipline with Primary Care providers and other Medical/Surgical services and personnel in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system. Provide on-call services for the Cardiology section as assigned. Shares after hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation Participate in monitoring the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care, both at the Section and facility level. Incumbent will perform administrative tasks as assigned, including, but not limited to peer reviews, Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE), special projects that help fulfill and/or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs as assigned by the Chief of Medicine/Chief of Staff/ELT Participate in the educational programs for section personnel as well as the medical staff. Regular attendance of required team meetings ii) Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization. iii) Complete medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Required: Board Eligibility or Board Certification Preferred Experience: Clinical interest and experience in the assessment and management of patients with heart failure. Interest, experience, and demonstrated accomplishments in cardiovascular research. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
