Assignments cover the full range of general to complex emergency room cases such as injuries caused by automobile accidents, assaults with weapons, other accidents which may cause serious harm. Incumbent stabilizes the patient and examines the patient to determine the seriousness of the illness or trauma. Makes preliminary diagnosis, directs, prescribes or provides relatively new treatment regimens, or arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required. Records patient-provider transactions in the problem oriented medical record format and completes required data collection instruments, referrals, and medical records as required. Fully participates in medical staff functions such as medical program review, quality assurance activities, and organizational functions including attending meetings and accepting committee assignments. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics).
