The position is located in Department of Primary Care located at the Williamsburg Community Based Medical Home, Williamsburg, VA 

 

Work involves performing specific medical tasks, such as conducting physical exams, follow-up appointments for health issues, fitness-for-duty evaluations, medical boards, flight physicals and aeromedical summaries. The duties to be performed require board certification or eligibility for certification in Family Medicine.

 

Work will be conducted under the general professional direction of the Chief, Department of Primary Care. Work is performed with considerable freedom from technical supervision. Consultation in a specialty area is available on request. The patient care duties involve the full range of requirements established by appropriate military regulations and the facility's leadership. 

 

Medical malpractice liability insurance is not required for federal civilian healthcare providers as they are covered by the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while acting within the scope of their employment.

 

 Employee works under the general supervision of the Chief, Department of Primary Care, who discusses/sets policies and objectives. There is no direct supervision, and the individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic procedures for patients. Incumbent works independently in accordance with methods and practices of the medical profession and established administrative policies as an expert in the field of adult medicine and Geriatrics. Medical diagnoses are not reviewed and the individual has considerable latitude for professional technical decisions, overall effectiveness, and accomplishment of objectives. The quality of professional and administrative work is evaluated using the quality assurance principles, policies, and regulations as mandated by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.

Responsibilities

As a Physician (Family Medicine), you will:

 

Duties require incumbent to be board certified or eligible in Family Medicine; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified, and be able to perform said protocols outlined therein in a manner which is unsupervised. Incumbent must also be able to communicate those skills and knowledge to other health professionals and paraprofessionals in time of need.


Takes ownership, responsibility for care of assigned panel of patients. Provides first contact, continuous, comprehensive primary care for infants, children, youth, and/or adults according to current standards of care, the patient centered medical home model of care, and military policy and relevant regulations. Care is generally rendered in the outpatient clinic on a scheduled basis, but to meet patient needs, they may need to be walked in or added to the physician's schedule. Provides care, advice, and referral coordination via telephone and secure messaging as appropriate. Meets targets for productivity established for the department. Provides diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services to patients primarily in the Department of Primary Care. As a physician, is responsible for examining, diagnosing, and prescribing courses of treatment in cases of illness and injuries.
Performs military specific medical tasks, including (but not limited to) periodic physical exams, follow-up for health issues identified during Post-Deployment Health Reassessment, temporary and permanent profiles, fitness-for-duty evaluations, medical boards. Performs procedures within scope of practice and scope of care for the Department of Primary Care. Physician must have or willing to be trained to attain a working knowledge of computer systems which are required in the performance of daily tasks. 

 

Provides direction/oversight to the assigned medical staff on duty within the Department of Primary Care when the incumbent of this position is on duty. Provides medical supervision for the coordination of care obtained from outside civilian and non-civilian hospitals/nursing homes.

 

 

Must understand the medical mission necessary to support the Department of Primary Care. Works closely with the Performance Improvement Program to reduce patient complaints and enhance the image of medical services available. Coordinates with ancillary care areas, i.e., Radiology, Pathology, Pharmacy, Nutritional Care, Rehabilitation Services and Occupational Health. Participates in training courses at the hospital as a participant and/or instructor.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Physician (Family Practice):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Residency Training for GP-14 Position: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Family Medicine) and equivalent experience and training equal to at least 4 years. Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.

The salary determination process begins after the initial job offer is accepted. This consists of the Activity Compensation Panel adding base pay and market pay to determine your starting salary and this will be provided to you once approved. Salary for physician positions is based on a tier scale, determined by the position specialty, grade and location. This announcement may be used to fill positions at any of the tiers listed below:
