Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery seeks to recruit an experienced, highly motivated, collaborative, visionary leader to further advance the clinical, educational and research missions as the Medical Director of the Mickey Shapiro 2 East Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (2E CVICU).
The mission and vision of the CV Surgery program at Corewell Health in Southeast Michigan is to become a nationally recognized center for CV surgery with top decile quality metrics, a high level of patient and family experience and a CV Surgery workforce that is highly competent, valued and has professional satisfaction in caring for complex patients.
The unit provides perioperative care to approximately >700 patients/year, 85% of whom are adult cardiac surgical patients. The CV surgery program is experiencing year-on-year growth. Establishing a program for LVAD shared care and eventually a Destination LVAD program is part of a 5-year strategic plan for CV Surgery and Advanced Heart Failure.
The Medical Director partners with faculty from Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Intensivists (Anesthesiology/SICU) as well as the Clinical Nursing Director and Service Line partners to provide leadership for the clinical operations of Cardiovascular Patients, creating a culture that engenders delivery of superb and efficient patient care in an educational environment enhancing the communication and team approach for all caregivers.
The Medical Director of the CVICU will serve in a unique partnership with the unit’s Clinical Nursing Director.
The Medical Director of the CVICU will have a joint appointment within the Department of Anesthesiology and the Division of Cardiac Surgery. This administrative role will report to the Corewell Health East Regional Division Chief of CV Surgery.
Pre-requisites include clinical experience in CV Anesthesiology and Critical Care (dual board certification) and Perioperative Echocardiography Board Certification.
Responsibilities:
Implementing a just culture of high reliability, teamwork, and respect. Facilitating quality improvement in the STS metrics relevant to CVICU, particularly, the STS Failure to Rescue domains (e.g., prolonged ventilation, post-op pneumonia, renal failure, stroke, and re-operation for bleeding). Facilitating quality improvement initiatives in the CMS Penalties for Hospital Acquired Complications (e.g., CAUTI, CLABI, HAPU, DVT/PE). Implementation of 1730pm multi-disciplinary bedside rounding for handover and proactive patient care plans for the APP night shift team. Facilitating professional development of the CVICU APP team to develop core competencies to practice “top of license” and gain procedural proficiency. Partnering with the CVICU Nursing Manager to develop workflows and processes to improve the quality of care in CVICU. Sustained improvement of CV surgery length of stay. Participation in CVICU-related quality and other standard meetings, including the WBUH monthly quality meeting, the monthly CV surgery M&M + Service Line Development meeting, and the WBUH QI workgroup meetings. Support unit-based initiatives identified during meeting discussion. Care model development in line with national benchmarks and industry standards for quaternary CV Surgery programs nationwide.
Qualifications:

Provide quality medical services to patients in a cost effective, appropriate manner and ensure coverage of case load at all times.Communicate regularly with patients’ families, referring physicians, specialists, nursing staff and other hospital departments regarding the plan of care and treatment of patients, including within 24 hours of admission, for any major change in a patient’s condition, and within 24 hours prior to discharge.
Document medical services in the patient’s medical record in a manner consistent with hospital, payor, and regulatory standards.Participate in on-call and weekend coverage, as required by the Department.
Participate in value-based reimbursement programs and quality initiatives, as required by the Department.Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) / Quality Assurance (QA) and peer review activities as requested.
Assist, as requested, in the development of policies and procedures as they related to medical practice and quality patient care.Participate in ongoing process improvement activities through the development/application of clinical paths, process improvement and other related activities.
Support patient participation in clinical trials and research projects, assess clinical safety and efficacy data, consistent with Research Institute policies.Provide oversight, teaching, and mentorship of fellows, residents, APPs (e.g., physician assistants and advance practice registered nurses), and students and others (as appropriate) providing services to patients, including meaningful participation with the affiliated medical schools as requested.P
