Physics | Optics internship: development of an achromatic phase retarder
Introduction

ASML focuses on developing innovative solutions to maximize the production of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light by harnessing high-power source lasers. A critical component in enabling this is the phase retarder (PR), which plays an important role in converting polarization states between linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) or vice versa. In addition, PR must withstand the rigorous requirements of high-power laser systems, where robust designs are essential to maintain performance and durability. The goal of this project is to study and develop achromatic reflective or transmissive phase retarder, addressing the challenges of polarization control and material robustness for the applications within the Optics Group.

Your Assignment

Your main tasks will include:

Research existing designs and materials for phase retarders and identifying their suitability for high-power applications;

Use optical simulation tools (e.g. Zemax, VirtualLab, Lumerical, Optilayer, or similar) to model the performance of the phase retarder and optimize its design;

Participate in the setup and execution of experiments to fabricate and test the phase retarder, including analysis and comparison;

Document your findings and present the results.

This is a Bachelor or a Master graduation/apprentice internship for 8 to 12 months, minimum 4 days per week (3 days onsite). The start date of this internship is as soon as possible, around March.

Your profile

To be a fit for this assignment, you:

Are busy with your bachelor's or master's in (Applied) Physics, Optics or Applied Mathematics;

Are skilled in optical simulation tools (e.g. Zemax, VirtualLab, Lumerical, Optilayer, or similar) (a plus);

Are proactive and have a hands-on mentality;

Are willing to gain experience in a highly demanding, complex, technical driven environment and have fun doing so;

Are eager to develop your technical skills and step outside of your comfort zone;

Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;

If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
