Physics/Engineering Internship: Measure Level Sensor resolution accuracy
Introduction

Are you a graduating bachelor or master's student in Physics or Math's looking for an internship? Does Matlab interest you? Do you enjoy model simulation? Then this internship might be interesting to you!

ASML lithography machines need to continuously improve, in order to produce ever more powerful computer chips. These machines use DUV or EUV light to print the chip design into a photo resistant layer which is only a few 10s of nanometers thick and gets even thinner.

This requires positioning the wafer on which the chips are printed at exactly the right height. In order to do so, the Level Sensor will have to measure the height of the wafer with around 1 nm error at ever increasing speed.

In a combined effort by ASML Research and Development & Engineering departments, we are exploring all kinds of different concepts to enable this.

Your assignment

The Level Sensor is a light-based sensor. A promising route to decrease the measurement error by further improving the properties such as the colors, angles and polarization of the light.

Your assignment tasks include, but is not limited to:

Explore how to optimize the Level Sensor properties;

Simulation and modeling;

Determine wafer height map with 1nm accuracy;

Be a fully integrated member of the project team, join us in the office and be the owner of your own topic.

Your Profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

Are a master's or graduating bachelor's student in Physics, Math's or Electrical Engineering;

Must have experience with Matlab;

Preferably have experience with Python;

Are able to analyze and report out on data findings;

Have good social skills and willing to work in a team;

Are solution oriented and have a hands-on mentality;

Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

This is a master/bachelor internship or bachelor graduation project with a duration of 6-12 months, for 4-5 days a week. The start date is flexible, between November 2025 and February 2026.

Other requirements you need to meet:

You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

Attach your cover letter with a clear motivation why you are interested in this internship assignment in particular;

You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you ‘re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate.

If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work.
