The Role

The specific assignment is for a pipefitter to work on the shipyard’s utility infrastructure piping systems that may include steam, compressed air, city water, gases, sewer, etc. Piping may be located on or in piers, docks, shops, plants, buildings, trenches, tunnels, etc. The job may involve exposure to extreme weather and other environmental conditions encountered in shipbuilding and manufacturing including noise, fumes, chemicals, moving and energized machines, cranes, and systems. The work includes layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, and the maintenance of piping and piping systems, appurtenances, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, and industrial processing systems, on the basis of knowledge or system operation and study of building plans or working drawings. Candidate will be expected to place high priorities on safety and quality-workmanship.  Candidate should be physically fit and able to bend, stoop, kneel, lift and capable of climbing vertical ladders and working at moderate heights.

 

Pipefitters are responsible for installing these complex systems together on the ship and in the shop: more than 23 miles of pipe are installed on a submarine, and more than 230 miles of pipe are installed on a carrier. As a pipefitter, you will learn to read blueprints, fabricate, install, inspect, and test the many piping systems onboard a ship. In your first few weeks at the company you will attend a Fundamentals of Piping Fitting class where you will receive important information needed for you to perform you job. Must Have

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.


Candidates must be able to:

Climb ladders and work at extreme heights.  Work in small, tight, or confined spaces.  Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.  Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more Work while repeatedly reaching overhead. Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions. Work in areas with radiation.  Work assigned shift as production needs.  Take and pass a Physical Agility Test. Nice to Have

High school graduate or equivalent preferred

Trades school training, familiarity with plumbing and mechanical codes, and Journeyman’s plumbing license is highly desirable
Experience in the installation and repair of live mechanical piping systems
Depending on area, specific technical, medical and physical requirements may apply, such as radiation worker; grade A cleanliness or asbestos worker qualifications
Ability to read and accurately follow written, oral and graphic instructions
Solid skills in power and hand tools
Have the ability to work a variable work schedule including overtime
