A Brief Summary of This Position

Valmont is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for the Plant Cleanup position in Houston, TX Coatings Division.  We are looking for a highly driven individual that will prepare products and materials for the galvanizing process by hanging angle on spreader bars, staging tubular products, and preparing small parts for galvanizing.

Essential FunctionsMove lightweight pieces of steel by hand from different locations in the plant and yardOverall plant clean-up (exterior and interior production bays)Assist in general plant clean up and housekeepingAbility to operate a small forkliftDump wire hoppers, trash hoppers, and wood hoppersClean yard and driveways by picking up and disposing dunnage, wire, and other debrisAssist chemical technician with transitions and chemical additionsAssist with facilities maintenance (i.e. painting, filter changes, furniture moves, pressure washing, etc.)Assist with storm water preventions, clean and maintain drains, pump out excess water, etc.Work safely, protecting self and others from accident and injury

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:The ability to read and follow written and verbal instructionsThe ability to accurately read a tape measureThe ability to communicate problems or needs to departmental supervisionThe ability to lift up to 50 pounds from ground to shoulder height or higherMust be a physically able to stand for long periods of time (length of shift) in open air environment; wear PPE; maintain safe work environmentMust have a high awareness for safety at all timesMust be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

 Highly qualified candidates will also possess:High School Diploma or GED equivalentSix months of previous experience with hand tools and gauges including impact wrenches, air grinders, drills, taps, oxygen acetylene torches, and mill gaugesSix months of previous experience operating a bridge craneThe ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive mannerThe ability to pay attention to detail and follow work instructions Certification of heavy equipment operation including forklift

Job Conditions

The employee is continually exposed to a working environment consisting of smoke and irritating particulate impurities, acid fumes from pickling tanks, and large quantities of windblown dust and ash produced as by-product to the process.  In addition, the nature of the industry results in extreme heat in the summer (typically 10-15 degrees above outdoor temperature) and melting snow off of incoming material results in damp, cold working conditions in the winter.  The winter conditions are doubly hard to manage. 

Hazards

The galvanizing industry is a heavy, demanding industry that is plagued by many hazards; however, this job description assumes that many of these hazards are avoidable if properly managed by close supervision and skilled employees.  Some hazards include hypersensitive reaction to chemical environment, heat exhaustion or aggravations created by blowing dust and ash.  In addition, constant exposure to such hazards as burns, cuts, contusions of various degrees and eye injuries make the possibility for incidents high even under the best conditions.
