Plant Health Diagnostic Laboratory Scientist

PURPOSE

Conduct accurate and timely diagnosis of plant diseases to support breeding programs in identifying and mitigating disease threats.

Implement advanced diagnostic techniques and protocols to ensure precise identification of pathogens affecting crops.

Organize and curate a comprehensive collection of plant pathogens for use in research and breeding efforts.

Maintain databases and documentation to catalog pathogen samples, ensuring accessibility and usability for ongoing research and breeding activities.

Contribute to breeding strategy development by integrating pathogen data and insights into the selection and development of new plant varieties and hybrids.

 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform routine and specialized diagnostic tests to identify plant pathogens affecting crops using microscopy, serological assays, PCR, and other molecular techniques for accurate pathogen detection;Collect, isolate, and culture diverse plant pathogens to build and expand the organization's pathogen collection;Ensure proper storage and preservation of pathogen samples for long-term viability and usability;Establish and maintain a comprehensive database for cataloging pathogen samples, including metadata such as host range, geographical origin, and genetic characteristics;Regularly update and organize the database to facilitate efficient retrieval and utilization of pathogen information;Innovate and refine diagnostic protocols for new and emerging plant pathogens;Validate diagnostic procedures to ensure accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability in pathogen detection;Consult with breeders and researchers to understand breeding objectives and prioritize disease diagnostic needs;Provide timely diagnostic results and recommendations to support breeding decisions aimed at developing disease-resistant crop varieties;Train and educate staff on proper sampling techniques, diagnostic methodologies, and pathogen handling protocols;Conduct workshops or seminars to disseminate knowledge on plant disease diagnostics within the organization;Implement quality assurance practices to ensure diagnostic tests meet established standards and regulatory requirements;Maintain compliance with biosafety and biosecurity protocols in handling and storing pathogen samples.

 

WHO YOU ARE
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in Plant Pathology with demonstrated experience in disease diagnose using microscopy, serological assays, PCR, and other molecular techniques for accurate pathogen detections/identification;Very strong background in pathogen morphology and disease signals;Results orientation, agility, and attention to details;Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills;Strong record of innovation and applying new technology in product design and development.

PREFERRED QUALIFIACTIONS

Demonstrated experience working with row crops such as corn, soy, cotton, wheat or canola is a plus.  YOUR APPLICATION
