Plant Maintenance Specialist

Job Summary

Plant Maintenance Specialists are responsible for routine and non-routine maintenance activities, preventive and predictive maintenance on the sites' manufacturing and process equipment. Daily tasks include performing maintenance in the areas of rotating equipment, pneumatics, and me­ chanical systems. Maintenance Specialists coordinate troubleshooting effmts and strive to imple­ ment improvements with operations and engineers as needed to assure the day-to-day site opera­ tion. The Plant Maintenance Specialist troubleshoots, analyzes and improves the operation of plant equipment and performs process maintenance tasks (eg. media changes, passivation and cleaning) needed to suppott plant operations, quality specifications, and production requirements. This shift-work position requires an open minded, positive, high-energy individual with a strong commitment to both quality and results.

Functional:Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of troubleDismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective partsExamines form and texture of parts to detect imperfectionsInspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirementsAdjusts functional parts of devices and control instrumentRepairs or replaces defective partsLubricates and cleans partsStart devices to test their performance.Uses oxy-acetylene welding apparatus including adjusting regulators, selection of proper tips, adjusting the flame, tack welding and depositing beads - flat position, vertical, over­ head welds, different type of jointsSets up necessary equipment for arc welding and utilizing equipment that includes select­ing the proper rod, making necessary adjustments, striking the arc, tack welding in flat position, practice arc welding in vertical and overhead positions, making single pass and multiple pass welds; performing butt, vee, lap and fillet weldsDemonstrates capability to use heli-arc weldingMeasures, lays out, cuts, and threads pipe by hand and machineBends piping and tubingMakes and installs pipe with screwed fittings and flanged fittings.Repairs and replaces parts on valves, traps, pressure regulators, etc.Lays out piping from drawings or instructions. Prepares Bills of Material including length of pipe and nipples, flange sizes, gaskets, bolts, fittings, valves, supports, etcMakes and installs non-ferrous pipe and fittings such as copper tubing, plastic and fiber­ glassFollows safety regulations and procedures for electrical workSplices and joins conductors including preparation of conductors; makes various types of joints by soldering, taping, and solderless connectorsInstalls conduit, including cutting, reaming, threading, and bending conduit, determining length of conduit required, application of various terminal fittings, installing conduit sys­tem.Installs wiring systems for lighting.Maintain knowledge of operating principles of various types of switches and installation; installs panels and fixtures.Tests and troubleshoots lighting systems including open circuits, shorts and grounds. Uses test lamp, voltage tester, and clamp ammeter. Locating and replacing defective fuses. Maintains emergency lighting.Follows inspection and maintenance procedures for lighting fixtures, lighting panels, motors, starters, controls and circuit breakers at voltages to 480 volts.Installs and troubleshoots motors, starters and controls for single or multiphase voltages.Follows procedures for working on energized circuits.Services, overhauls and replaces parts for forklift trucks, transporters, hoists, portable electrical tools, etc.Starts up all equipment, cleans, inspects, repairs and/or replaces components, and properly reassembles equipment such as: rolls, gear housing, pumps, "Lightning" mixers blowers, gas burners, Pfaudler reactors, glass repairs, spray machines, heat exchangers, boilers, compressors, filters and associated equipment.All requirements of Plant Maintenance Trainee Program.Layout, fabricate, setup, install, repair, relocate, weld and maintain to specifications structural steel parts and shapes, sheet metal articles, all types of piping and piping sys­tems, building fixtures, machinery and equipment.Plan, prepare and layout work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, instruction manuals, verbal and written instructions including establishing sequence of operations, estimating materials required, and making necessary calculations.Diagnose, troubleshoot, inspect and service mechanical equipment, plumbing fixtures, sanitary facilities, piping systems, welds, sheet metal articles, building structures and as­ associated equipment.Perform manual operations such as burning and grinding, sweating and tinning bearings, surface preparation for welding, cutting material, soldering, pipe and sheet bending.​
Safety, Health, and Environment:Support safety policies and procedures by ensuring that all maintenance work assigned has been critically reviewed for safety & health considerationsEnsure that all maintenance work or maintenance originated projects are completed in such a way that the work supports the existing environmental regulations.Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with EHS policies and practices.Ensure Standard Operating Procedures are followed for all tasksSupport site safety programs, behavioral based safety activities, audits and other EHS activities to improve safety performance.Report and take necessary action to resolve unsafe conditions immediatelyComply with external and internal requirements and regulations (IFF, OSHA, DNREC, etc).

Quality Support:Monitor and maintain process control instrumentation & equipmentMaintain and calibrate maintenance measuring & test equipmentParticipate in corrective actions regarding customer complaints/non-conformance as necessaryProvide maintenance and calibration services and documentation in accordance with QA requirements in order to ensure compliance with industry requirements and that quality product is produced

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/ ExperienceA minimum of a High School Diploma or GED or equivalent is required
 Knowledge/Skills/CompetenciesMust be able to read, write, and comprehend documents in English.A valid U.S. driver's license is required.Must be willing and able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPB) to in­clude; wearing safety equipment, such as earplugs, gloves, safety glasses, hardhats, hairnets, and steel-toed shoes are required.While performing the duties of this job, you may be required to stand; walk (up and down stairs); twist; bend; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb for extended periods of time; and will require the ability to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds is required.​
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/CompetenciesA 2-year technical/vocational degree in a related field is strongly preferred.A minimum off (4) years relevant professional work (general mechanic, pipefitter, chemical manufacturing, refinery, etc.).Journeyman certification.Millwright and/or precision mechanic experience.
