Job Summary
The purpose of this classification is to supervise shift operations and coordinate activities involving the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant systems and related equipment to produce quality effluent water in compliance with federal, state and local requirements.
Essential Functions
• The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

• Assists in ensuring departmental compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; assists in ensuring adherence to established safety procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
• Operates and monitors plant/systems via computer; conducts visual plant inspections and monitors plant operations/processes to ensure proper operations and to detect equipment failures, potential leaks, or other problem situations; troubleshoots outlying wells and pump stations; makes adjustments in plant operations as appropriate; reports faulty equipment or problem situations to appropriate personnel.
• Operates wastewater treatment plant equipment to ensure proper treatment of wastewater and production of effluent water; monitors effluent storage facilities, conducts laboratory testing, and logs meter readings of effluent sites and plant flow; monitors and maintains side stream flows during low-flow situations; monitors holding ponds, and golf course ponds; monitors chemical levels and administers chemicals into processes; adds enzymes to process; raises and lowers baffles in aeration basins; monitors and administers alum; checks sludge blankets; monitors and controls return sludge rates and waste sludge rates; runs sludge belt presses in emergency situations; transfers sludge to gravity thickener; presses sludge; maintains grit system and bar screens; drains clarifier scum troughs; skims and backwashes filters; disinfect filters; troubleshoots lift stations; monitors odor control systems; opens/closes valves; applies lime to ground; cleans, contains, and decontaminates spills; bleeds condensation from air tanks; exercises pumps; bleaches auto sampler; hoses down aeration basins, clarifiers, and rotor walls.
• Supervises shift operations; develops work schedules, monitors overtime; compiles payroll forms; provides data for budget preparation; writes work orders; assists in developing plant operating protocols; completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, charts, weather reports, flow reports, storage reports, shift turnover reports, equipment status logs, inventory records, chain of custody forms, inspection reports, or other documents.
• Compiles data for regulatory reports and enters data into the computer; produces operational reports for submission to regulatory agencies.
• Monitors inventory levels of department equipment, chemicals, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates orders/requisitions for new or replacement materials; obtains competitive price quotes; receives incoming orders of chemicals and supplies; conducts periodic inventory counts; prepares and maintains asset inventory records.
• Monitors gauges, meters, and charts to ensure proper plant operations; maintains logs/records of plant operations, meter/gauge readings, test results, chemical applications, and other data; assists in preparing mandatory reports for submission to regulatory agencies. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and procedures; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED* required.
• Three (3) years of related experience.
• Fingerprinting required.
*General Educational Development (GEDs) must be issued by the American Council on Education through an approved GED Administrator. For Florida, the approved GED Administrator would be the Florida Department of Education (public schools or adult education centers).
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:
• Must possess and maintain a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Class B Wastewater Treatment license.

+ Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County’s Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
