Platform Engineer 

The Platform Engineer is a technical leader who contributes to the infrastructure and platform design in alignment to the business strategy. The Platform Engineer delivers a platform that is resilient, highly available, secure, cost effective, and improves engineering productivity.  Overall, the Platform Engineer has strong technical abilities, a sound understanding of modern infrastructure design, CI/CD design and automation, and possesses advanced knowledge and skill in implementing relevant solutions. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Responsibilities for the Platform Engineer can vary, but should include: 

Act as a technical leader and point of escalation, provide mentorship, and technical direction to team-members and evangelize best practices and methodologies.  Conduct necessary analysis, design, and prepare technical documentation and runbooks for new toolsets and processes.  Design platform solutions and toolsets using infrastructure as code and configuration management.  Cultivate strong working relationships with scrum teams, engineers, architects, vendors, contractors and leadership.  Advocate the use of configuration management tools for infrastructure in a hybrid cloud model.  Aligns platform capabilities to overall solution and business strategy.  Design and build pipelines/patterns, following CI/CD practices, for delivering applications, services, and infrastructure in a consistent, reliable, and repeatable manner. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Bachelor degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related (equivalent experience considered).  5+ years experience in a 24x7 production enterprise-class environment.  3+ years experience with Windows and Linux administration/support in a production environment.  3+ years experience with Kubernetes administration/support in a production environment.  3+ years Azure or comparable cloud resource administration/support in a production environment.  Strong written and verbal interpersonal skills.  Excellent problem solving and analytical skills with attention to detail and driving issues to resolution.  Proficient in modern engineering with the Kubernetes platform and related components (ie service mesh and operators) and practices (gitOps).  Proficient with scripting languages (multiple preferred): Bash, PowerShell, and Python.  Engineering of automation and orchestration platforms for large-scale Windows and Linux environments using infrastructure as code and configuration management tools (Ansible, Terraform DSL, DSC).  Proficient with implementing CI/CD best practices and patterns for delivering a solution comprised of software and infrastructure.   Able to implement security best practices in server configuration, tool development, and access controls.  Develop appropriate metrics (SLI) and monitors to ensure operational excellence for services being delivered.  Proficient with the following monitoring solutions (multiple preferred): Splunk, Prometheus/Grafana, Azure Monitor, and Microsoft SCOM.  Proficiency in engineering and administration of Linux or other Unix variants (Ubuntu,  RedHat, etc) in a production environment.  Designing and building pipelines to deliver infrastructure platforms.  Strong customer focus, ownership, bias for action and the ability to dive deep.  Excellent ability to align business processes and requirements with a technical implementation.  Write and contribute to project plans, engineering level documentation, and develop operational excellent standard operating procedures and run books with a bias towards automation.  Ability to apply continuous improvement practice for increasing the efficiency and scale of the CI/CD pipeline. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Experience designing large-scale distributed systems.  Proficient with programming languages (eg. C#, JavaScript).  Proficient with networking and troubleshooting (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, routing, firewalls, LAN/WAN, load balancing).  Proficient with data tier languages: TSQL, SPL (Search Processing Language), KQL (Kusto Query Language)   Knowledgeable of storage and how to implement and manage across a variety of solutions.  Experience with Healthcare industry HIPAA regulations (similar regulated industry experience considered ie. PCI, SOX, HiTRUST)  Direct experience migrating solutions to Azure (comparable cloud platforms considered).  Experience working in an Agile and/or SAFe environment. 

CERTIFICATION / TRAINING 

Candidates with relevant certifications are preferred, including but not limited to the following: 

Configuration: RHCE-Ansible, Terraform Associate  Kubernetes - CKA, KCSP  Linux – RHCE, CompTIA Linux+, GCUX, LPI  Microsoft: Azure Administrator, Azure DevOps Engineer, Azure Architect, MCSE
