Plumber/Senior Plumber

Facilities Management's Health System Physical Plant at the University of Virginia has an exciting opportunity for a Plumber or Senior Plumber. This position will be filled at either level, based on finalist candidate qualifications.

Plumbers provide comprehensive maintenance and repair of all plumbing systems in support of zone maintenance in the Health System Physical Plant. They maintain all systems in operational condition and provide a safe and comfortable environment for all plumbing systems in support of zone maintenance. The Plumber should be able to read blueprints and have basic computer skills.

Senior Plumbers are responsible for similar duties as Plumbers, however, they operate with advanced skill and independence. Senior Plumbers direct, lead, and perform a wide variety of advanced repair, installation, and maintenance tasks to plumbing fixtures and related equipment. They are responsible for independently installing, repairing, and replacing complex plumbing equipment, while providing technical guidance to lower-level plumbers.

Plumber Responsibilities:

Replace and install plumbing and mechanical components.

Perform preventative maintenance on all plumbing systems and update or repair the systems when necessary.

Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, BOCA, federal, state, and local regulations, and applicable building codes.

Respond to requests from the University community and address plumbing problems quickly and professionally.

Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.

Ensure that all safety and personal protective equipment are used.

Perform miscellaneous duties such as snow and ice removal and special events setups, as assigned by the supervisor.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Senior Plumber Responsibilities:

Diagnose plumbing problems and perform repairs as required. Perform preventative maintenance on all plumbing systems and update or repair the systems as necessary.

Lay out piping systems; install proper hangers and support systems. Install pipefitting in compliance with applicable codes and construction documents.

Foster a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, and applicable building codes.

Respond to requests from the University community and address plumbing problems.

Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.

Ensure that all safety equipment and personal protective equipment are used.

Assist supervisor coordinating daily assignments.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent

Four [4] years of experience in the plumbing trade for Plumber; Seven [7] years of experience for Senior Plumber.

Journeyman or higher plumbing license.

Valid Driver’s license.

Must have Flu shots (Required by the Medical Center).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a hospital setting.

Licensed with Backflow Certification.

Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background checks and health screens prior to the first day of employment.

Anticipated Hiring Range:

Plumber: $24.50 – $29.00 per hour ($49,920 - $60,320 Annually).

Senior Plumber: $29.00 – $34.00 per hour ($60,320 - $70,720 Annually).

Physical Demands:

Employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks).  Employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
