If so, the City of Norfolk's Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of Police Officer (Part-Time First Precinct Detective) within the Field Operations Division. The incumbent is responsible for performing a wide variety of administrative duties, works with citizens and officers, and works in cooperation with the Norfolk's Detective Division/Investigators within the surrounding cities. Essential Functions Essential functions include, but are not limited to: + Assists in the prosecution of offenders by investigating reports of crime, preparing cases for prosecution, testifying in court, and working with attorneys. + Maintains knowledge of state, local, and federal laws. + Maintains administrative requirements by preparing reports, paperwork, and forms. + Follows up with citizens via email or telephone to update reports. + Attends specialized training. + Prepares case files, affidavits, court orders, and search warrants. + Interfaces daily with reporting management systems to review and research reported crimes, and to disseminate information. + Collects CCTV footage for investigations. + Advises community resource officers and supervisors of crime trends in their sectors. + Works in cooperation with Norfolk's Detective Division and Investigators in surrounding cities to address concurrent cases and persons of interest. + Works independently to solve cases. Education/Experience Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. + Certified police officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia for a municipal, county, and/or state law enforcement agency. + Three (3) years of consecutive active service as a certified police officer in another state of the United States for a municipal, county, and/or state law enforcement agency. The preferred candidate will possess: + Prior sworn law enforcement experience. + Prior Detective experience. + Prior Investigation experience. Additional Information & Requirements + Valid Driver's License. + Must be a U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized). + Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer certification. + Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, day shift hours with the flexibility to occasionally work weekends; 20-hour work week maximum. Work Location: 2500 N. Military Highway, Norfolk, VA 23513 Intermittent\Retiree Part-time Employees: Intermittent\Retiree part-time employees will work no more than 1040 hours in a twelve (12) month period of time. The hours are flexible and based on the department's operation's needs.
