**_Police Sergeant - Mercy Health Youngstown_**
_The police sergeant serves as a first line supervisor directly responsible to a department manager._ _Duties include but are not limited to the first line supervision of the police department's activities throughout the facility and all on-duty activities of employees assigned to his/her squad or team._ _They will supervise the protection of persons and property in and around the facility and associated owned or leased properties. They will respond to emergencies to provide service as required._ _Performance is evaluated through observation, oral and written reports and by results obtained._
**Essential Job Functions**
+ The sergeant will supervise sworn and non-sworn department personnel on his/her assigned team in all areas related to protective service activities at the facility.
+ Sergeants will make decisions, provide direction to subordinates and exercise independent judgement in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
+ Provide direction to the protective service department and facility staff regarding the application and interpretation of policy, procedure, and relevant laws.
+ They will review written subordinate reports and complete daily shift reports.
+ Sergeants are expected to lead, motivate and evaluate the work of assigned personnel and make recommendations regarding opportunities for improvement, training needs or disciplinary actions.
+ Routinely inspect uniforms and equipment.
+ Investigate complaints against personnel and respond in a manner that results in appropriate complaint resolution.
+ Keep other supervisors and the chief of police informed of important activities and critical incidents.
+ Sergeants will oversee investigations in hospital related incidents.
+ They will ensure compliance with the department's MOU with local law enforcement agencies and communicate any criminal case that may be classified as a felony and/or require outside law enforcement resources.
+ Complete appropriate reports and documentation.
+ Have an understanding of court processes and procedures.
+ Assist with department scheduling to ensure adequate staffing levels.
+ Monitor department productivity.
+ Take On-Call as needed or assigned by chief of police or designee.
+ Have a good understanding of security technology to include but not limited to cameras, access control and alarm systems.
+ Review body camera video and CCTV for investigations.
+ Other duties assigned by the Chief of Police or designee.
**Employment Qualifications**
**Required Minimum Education:**
High School Diploma or GED
**Preferred Education:**
2 Year/ Associates Degree
Specialty/Major: Criminal Justice / Public Safety
**Licensing/ Certification**
**Licensure/Certification** **Required:**
Current OPOTA Certificate, BLS, Valid Driver’s License, and NAPPI training within first month of hire
**Licensure/Certification** **Preferred:**
IAHSS Supervisor Certification (or equivalent)
**Minimum Qualifications**
**Minimum Years and Type of Experience:**
3 to 5
**Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities** **Required:**
Firearm Qualifications; successfully pass bi-annual firearms qualifications. Computer skills; Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Typing, min of 30 wpm.
**Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities** **Preferred:**
Meet minimum physical fitness standards based on the Cooper Institute's physical fitness norms for law enforcement. Test consists of: Sit-ups / min, Push-ups / min and 1.5 mile run.
**Combination of post-secondary education and experience in lieu of a degree.**
