Policy Analyst
Job Description The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts. The New York City Department of Correction is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative, and goal-oriented individual to join the Policy and Procedures unit (PPU) in the role of Policy Analyst. The Policy & Procedures Unit is positioned within the Strategic Initiatives Unit to support critical programs designed to improve systems and encourage institutional reform. The Policy & Procedures Unit is responsible for the administration of all Departmental policy documents, as well as drafting policy updates and revisions in accordance with industry standards and correctional best practices. Policy analysts within Strategic Initiatives play a key role in researching best practices and industry standards, drafting, and revising policy documents, and ensuring successful implementation of updates to procedures and protocols. The selected candidate’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following: - Review, update, and draft Departmental policy, procedure, and protocol related to institutional operations, procedures and training. - Research and make informed recommendations to align policy and program efforts with Departmental priorities. - Identify strategies for improving institutional operations and meeting compliance standards. - Develop expertise in jail operations, correctional best practices, and national reform efforts. - Track and respond to internal and external requests for policy documents. - Prepare memoranda, status reports, presentations, and agendas related to policy development and implementation. - Routinely audit and inspect policies that require review and updates. - Build and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of individuals, including internal and external stakeholders; and - Performing special projects and related duties as assigned. Qualifications 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or 2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or 3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
