A Port Captain serves in a leadership role to supervise day-to-day activities of assigned vessel operations and crews. They work closely with Operations, Logistics, and the Marine Repair Facility to ensure towing orders and maintenance activities are carried out as scheduled. The Port Captain is responsible for overseeing the operations of assigned boats, assisting in the training and development of crewmembers, providing subject matter expertise on vessel navigation, enforcement of safety practices by crewmembers, monitoring the condition of company vessels / equipment, and monitoring of boat operating budgets. Each Port Captain must be knowledgeable of changes the United States Coast Guard (USCG) put in place with Subchapter M compliance requirements, and how to adjust to the industry changes. These numbers and changes have all been increasing on a yearly basis to where the level of responsibility and scope of each assignment has increased drastically. This position is also responsible for visiting each boat they manage while having to ride with the steersman. Training and maintenance of the proper licenses for boat crew is run through this position by keeping in heavy communication with shoreside training and safety. The Port Captains maintain a USCG Master’s license for inland and western rivers and may operate a boat if needed. Individuals in this position must possess strong leadership abilities and excellent communication skills. Marine industry experience is required. A high school diploma is required. The PC may support vessel and barge operations including loading and unloading operations during transfers. He will partner with TSG and Maintenance to improve the mechanical reliability and preventive maintenance programs for barge operations. Collaborates with Marathon Terminals, Refineries and third party Tankermen. He will assist in procuring, vetting, approving supply and grocery vendors. He may be asked to perform routine inspections on barges to ensure personnel are following procedures and safe working practices as well as ensuring that loading and offloading equipment is being properly maintained.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
. High School Diploma/GED
. Five (5) or more years of marine industry experience is required, including three (3) or more years of supervisory experience.
. A Master’s of Towing Vessel Merchant Mariner Credential license issued by the United States Coast Guard
