Starting salary depends upon qualifications:
$33.81/hr. to $47.33/hr.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
Five years of experience or training in the maintenance and repair of computer-driven cranes; OR
Four years of experience or training in the installation, maintenance, or repair of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic systems in either a commercial or industrial setting; or in the maintenance or repair of computer-driven heavy equipment plus four years of experience or training in the maintenance and repair of computer-driven cranes.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
New employees must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC).
Job Concepts
FUNCTION OF WORK:
To supervise the maintenance, testing, and repair of computer-driven cranes used for loading and/or unloading ships.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Port Crane Technician 4 by the presence of direct supervision responsibilities.
Differs from Port Crane Manager by the absence of managerial responsibility for crane operations.

Port Crane Supervisor
This position serves in the Crane Maintenance Department of the Port of New Orleans and reports directly to the Port Crane Manager. This department is responsible for the maintenance and rental of nine computer driven ship to shore container cranes and two rubber tire gantry cranes, in addition to ancillary equipment and facilities including but not limited to electric substation, mobile equipment (forklift, manlift, generator, etc.) and storage facilities. These assets are valued in excess of $100 million; with an annual maintenance budget in excess of $5 million. The safe and reliable operation of this equipment is essential to general over $30 million of the Port’s annual revenue and the Port’s role in the region as an economic engine, providing and maintaining more than 160,00 jobs locally and statewide.
This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and Louisiana Driver’s License, Class E; and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment. The incumbent is required to have knowledge of the use of a UHF radio, which requires proper radio etiquette. The incumbent shall also utilize a telephone, cell phone, and email to facilitate communications when required.
This position may require the incumbent to work extended days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.
25% Container Crane Electrical Maintenance & Repairs:Incumbent is responsible for being knowledgeable of and for the supervision of subordinate technicians performing all electrical maintenance on the Port’s ship to shore container cranes and rubber tire gantry cranes. This includes, but is not limited to inspection, testing, troubleshooting, periodic maintenance, preventative maintenance, repairs and replacement (all or in part) to all electrical systems. This includes but is not limited to complex electrical / electronic systems, computer programs, GE / Cutler Hammer / ABB drive systems, Allen Bradley / Siemens / ABB programmable logic controllers, heavy industrial analog/digital and static/dynamic controlled systems, communication cables (ethernet, fiber optic, coaxial), electronic cards, motor starters, relays, proximity limit switches, circuit breakers, bus interfaces and reversing contractors. Incumbent uses schematics and diagrams for inspection and troubleshooting. Uses standard tools such as electrical multi-meters, power tools and hand tools. Utilizes laptop computer to interface communications with spreader bars and other equipment. Incumbent may be required to assist and/or monitor specialized contractors performing repairs to Port equipment. Works with vendors, suppliers and consultants as directed. The incumbent communicates daily with Port Crane Manager in all matters related to maintenance and repairs.
25%Container Crane Mechanical and Hydraulic Maintenance & Repairs:Incumbent is responsible for being knowledgeable of and for the supervision of subordinate technicians performing all mechanical and hydraulic maintenance on the Port’s ship to shore container cranes and rubber tire gantry cranes. This includes, but is not limited to inspection, testing troubleshooting, periodic maintenance, preventable maintenance, repairs and replacement (all or in part) to all mechanical and hydraulic systems. This includes but is not limited to greasing/lubricating all moving parts and equipment as required, maintaining and repairing structural components of container crane spreader bars, open and closed gear boxes, changing of large industrial wire ropes, installation of bearings, roller and sheaves, maintenance and repair of large diesel engines and maintenance and repair of multi-function hydraulic control units and systems. Incumbent may be required to assist and/or monitor specialized contractors performing repairs to Port equipment. The incumbent communicates daily with Port Crane Manager in all matters related to maintenance and repairs.
20% Coordination of Crane Operations:Incumbent is responsible for cooperating with two other Port Crane Supervisors to coordinate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week customer crane rentals. This includes monitoring email communications and timely assigning appropriate cranes for the operations, determining staffing needs for operations and communicating schedules to Port Crane Technicians. Incumbent acts as (or delegates) primary Port contact for each vessel operation, such that customer’s superintendent may report unforeseen issues that arise during operations. Incumbent communicates verbally and written with multiple stevedoring companies in order to rent Port owned equipment. Engages daily in direct communication with Port’s largest customers. Coordinates with other Port personnel to ensure appropriate placement of berth assignments according to crane usage needs. Requests work orders and creates all correspondence associated with any crane damages which arise as a result of customer’s operations. Advises Port Crane Technicians in the appropriate documentation of crane rental activities for accurate execution of the Tariff. The incumbent communicates daily with Port Crane Manager in all matters related to crane rental.
20% Employee Supervision & Administrative Duties:Directs Port Crane Technicians in the execution of provided daily work activity schedules. Authorizes and directs changes to daily work activity schedules as needed to address unforeseen issues. Reviews and approves completed work. Recommends hiring, promotions and disciplinary actions. Evaluates and trains staff. Administers the Crane Maintenance Department’s uniform policy, including annual uniform order placement. Administers the Crane Maintenance Department’s attendance policy, including review and approval of leave requests. Maintains all up-to-date employee safety certifications, TWIC, etc. Performs annual Knowledge & Skills Assessments (KSAs), Performance Evaluations (PES), and field audits of Port Crane Technicians. Coordinates with other departments for maintenance of fleet vehicles. The incumbent communicates daily with Port Crane Manager in all matters related personnel administration.
5% Container Crane Operation for Setup / Maintenance / Testing:Incumbent is responsible to be knowledgeable of and for the supervision of subordinate technicians in the safe operation of the container crane during all setups for incoming berthing for ships, maintenance and testing functions.
5% Other Duties, Including Emergency Support:Incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of Crane Maintenance Department and/or Port Maintenance Division.
