Project Background

The Intelligent Autonomous Systems Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati is seeking a talented postdoctoral researcher to join a cutting-edge project focusing on dynamic coupling effects in space manipulator systems used for In-Space or On-orbit Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM or OSAM). The successful candidate will investigate the dynamic coupling between robotic arms and their base spacecraft and develop bio-inspired control strategies to enhance the performance of space manipulator systems for complex space missions. Understanding and addressing dynamic coupling, which involves mass, inertia, geometry, joint constraints, and actuator limits, will be crucial for improving space robotics and in-space operations. As such, a background in both space systems and robotics would be highly advantageous.
 

Funding for this project comes from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of an annual extension based on performance.

The Intelligent Autonomous Systems Research Laboratory (http://www.ase.uc.edu/iasrl/), led by Dr. Donghoon Kim, is a cutting-edge facility within the Department of Aerospace Engineering & Engineering Mechanics at the University of Cincinnati. This lab is at the forefront of designing, controlling, and developing autonomous systems and robotic platforms, with a focus on space robotics. The lab's primary research areas include:

Guidance, Navigation, and Fault-tolerant Control of Autonomous Systems Design and Development of Space Robotics Collision-free Navigation and Coordination for Multi-robot Systems Interference-robust Localization Systems Artificial Intelligence Applications

 

The lab boasts a state-of-the-art indoor robotics arena that serves as the centerpiece for operating ground, aerial, and space vehicles. The lab has acquired other equipment over time to support the active and future research areas, including:

Two 6 degrees-of-freedom Stewart platforms and three robotic arms (2 x 4-DOF, 1 x 6-DOF) to support research area 2. Two ground and two aerial robots, along with high-specification computer machines, to support research area 3. A kit of 12 ultra-wideband sensors with tripods to support research area 4. More high-specification computers to support research area 5. A 4-camera motion capture system to support all research activities.

 

At the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Research Laboratory, you will work alongside a supportive and successful team of researchers and have the opportunity for intensive one-on-one collaboration with the faculty supervisor. Essential Functions Conduct independent research experiments and analyze data within a particular field, utilizing pre-determined research scope and methodology. Develop innovative ideas and approaches to enhance the current research and advance the field. Prepare and present data summaries, reports, manuscripts, and presentations of research results for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. Assist with grant writing and contribute to manuscript preparation for scientific publications. Maintain the laboratory and equipment, including ordering and tracking supplies, and ensuring adherence to laboratory safety protocols. Mentor and train junior research staff in laboratory techniques and protocols. Stay informed of the latest developments in the field to maintain and enhance professional expertise. Participate in appropriate training and professional development opportunities. Seek career and research advice from the faculty supervisor to develop and advance in the field. Perform additional duties as needed based on departmental requirements.

Required Education

Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Physics, or a related field.

Minimum Requirements Evidence of a good record of publications. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from various culturally diverse backgrounds. Strong understanding of spacecraft dynamics, robotic manipulator systems, and control theory. Experience with simulation tools such as MATLAB, Python, and SolidWorks. Effective communication skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse environment. Application Process
