Post-Doctoral Associate in the Division of Science [Mathematics] - Dr. Francesco Paparella
The Division of Science at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in the field of regional ocean modeling. This project aims to investigate the variability of water exchange between the Arabian/Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, its sensitivity to ongoing global changes, and its impact on regional marine biogeochemistry. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (MACCESS), a leading research center specializing in climate and environmental studies in the Arabian Peninsula and Gulf region. The key research questions include: + Variability in water exchange between the Gulf and the Sea of Oman and its impact on the Gulf's hydrography and biogeochemistry. + The sensitivity of water exchange to major anthropogenic changes such as climate change and desalination activities. + The impact of Gulf outflow on the biogeochemistry of the Arabian Sea. To address these questions, the project will leverage a combination of recently collected in-situ observations from MACCESS, high-resolution satellite data, and numerical simulations. The core modeling tool will be the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS), configured for the Arabian Gulf and northern Arabian Sea regions at submesoscale-eddy resolving resolution. We seek candidates with a strong background in geophysical fluid dynamics and ocean modeling. Prior knowledge of marine biogeochemistry is desirable but not essential. Exceptional talent and a proven research track record are required. Candidates should demonstrate creativity and scientific maturity, as they will have the opportunity to help shape the research direction. The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Paparella and Dr. Zouhair Lachkar. Terms of Employment + Duration: Two years (with a six-month probation period). + Renewability: The position is renewable based on satisfactory performance. + Benefits: + Highly competitive salary. + Housing allowance. + Generous travel, equipment, and publication funds. + Access to NYUAD’s world-class research facilities, including a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster with ~30,000 cores and 34 GPU nodes. Start Date: The position can begin as early as September 2025. Applications will remain open until the position is filled. Application Requirements Applicants must submit the following materials via Interfolio (all in PDF format): + Cover letter. + Curriculum vitae. + Transcript of degree. + At least three letters of recommendation. + A short statement of research accomplishments and interests, including how future research would contribute to MACCESS.
