The UHealth System at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Post Doctoral Scholar in the Public Health Sciences Department. 

CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                                                      

The Post Doctoral Scholar takes initiative and works independently in developing new research ideas and troubleshooting new assays. Further, the incumbent facilitates the training of students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                             

Assists in planning and designing research experiments, establishes priorities, and recommends schedules.

Presents research findings at local and national scientific conferences. Writes technical publications and reports.

Designs and writes programs to perform analysis and produces written reports on results.

Collects pilot data to help support new and competing renewal applications.

Supervises undergraduate and graduate research students and performs literature reviews.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                            

Education:

Ph.D. or MD Seeking graduates from a variety of related fields/backgrounds (e.g. physician scientists, psychologists, doctorate of public health, doctorate of nursing or health sciences, etc.)

Experience:

Those with experience using advanced research writing and statistical skills will receive preference.

The applicant should demonstrate both experience with and interest in any of the following areas of research: psychology and/or mental health, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, and prevention and community health, as well as related fields. Their experience and interest should be preferably focused on racial/ethnic minority health, LGBTQ health, behavioral medicine, HIV, chronic illnesses, trauma, mental health and/or community health.

The applicant will be required to affirm and empower diverse individuals in terms of race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental health, substance use, etc.

The applicant should demonstrate experience with and a commitment to serving Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ populations.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

The Department of Public Health Sciences, Department of Psychology, and the Center for HIV and Research in Mental Health (CHARM) are seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Scholar position for the Culturally-focused HIV Advancements through the Next Generation for Equity (CHANGE) Training Program (T32).

The CHANGE Training Program will train the next generation of HIV behavioral scientists with skills to address persistent health disparities in HIV treatment and prevention in Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ communities. The program will train and support individuals to engage in immersive, community embedded research on Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ populations, and research at the interface of HIV and combating health disparities rooted in structural racism and other “isms” (e.g., homophobia, transphobia).

This unique program will include a focus on immersive community engagement and community-based participatory research projects, integrated with coursework and training in key behavioral science topics such as socio-structural, bio-behavioral and epidemiological foundations of HIV/mental health research.

The CHANGE trainee will have a primary mentor/PI as well as be supported by 35 faculty mentors who are actively engaged in federally funded research, clinical care, and/or community health initiatives, and have experience in mentoring.

This is a full-time research position with 2 years of guaranteed funding and the possibility for renewal after. The successful candidate will be motivated to seek independent funding (e.g., through NIH) for career advancement. Grant writing mentorship will be provided.

1.          Training will focus on the following two linked areas:  culturally informed interventions for racial/ethnic, sexual, and gender minority populations and innovative bio-behavioral interventions including scale up, linkage, and dissemination/implementation programs for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention (TasP) in populations who need it most. Training will also emphasize on: innovative state-of-the-science statistical and design methods, c.) community engagement through participatory research, and professional development, mentorship, network building congruent with the needs of racial/ethnic trainees focused on minority populations -all to ensure long-term success of program graduates.

2.          The post-doc may be responsible for overseeing day to day research activities and supervising staff for studies in their mentor’s lab or related to the T32/CHANGE Research Program.

3.          The post-doc will help to train and supervise other staff (e.g. research associate, graduate students, and undergraduate students).

4.          The post-doc will support research activities at the University, under the supervision of a faculty member, in order to advance their knowledge and/or be documented by scientific publications.

5.          Work and collaborate on studies related to field of study.

6.          Ensure the design, development, execution and implementation of scientific research and/or development in collaboration with a research team. 7.          Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential research studies, interventions, programs, and manuscripts.

8.          Maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.

9.          Contribute to scientific literature and conferences, when appropriate.
