Postdoctoral Appointee - MSD Magnetic Heterostructures Using Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy

The Nanoscale Magnetic and Electronic Heterostructure Group of the Materials Science Division (MSD) has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral appointee to conduct research on magnetic heterostructures using Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy (LTEM). Within the group, we explore fundamental science governing the evolution of energy landscapes leading to emergent domain- and transport behavior of these materials, mediated via geometric patterning, confinement, and through interfacial interactions.

For this position, we seek to understand the evolution of spin textures and their relationship to topology in materials with an out-of-plane component of magnetization, such as those with interfacial DMI (for example: Co/Pt multilayers) and chiral magnets (for example: FeGe). The project will involve imaging nanomagnetic thin films and lithographically fabricated structures with LTEM, while simultaneously performing in-situ field and temperature driven experiments. It is likely that some of the experiments may require in-situ electrical transport measurements, and the additional use of PPMS and MPMS.

The successful candidate will be responsible for fabrication of suitable samples using focused ion-beam systems or electron beam lithography. Some amount of modeling and simulation work will be required.

Position Requirements

PhD in materials science, physics or closely related field; received within the last 5 years or upcoming year.

Experience working with Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Strong background in Materials Science or Physics.

Familiarity with image processing and simulation software.

(Preferred) Experience with nanofabrication, transport measurements, thin film deposition, in-situ TEM transport measurements.

Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
