Postdoctoral Associate

A postdoctoral associate appointment is available within the group of Adam Maxwell, Ph.D. and Eli Vlaisavljevich, PhD., in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics at Virginia Tech.
Candidates will take part in the NSF / FDA Scholar-in-Residence program, a joint program to conduct research and collaborate with researchers at FDA on topics related to public health and emerging medical device technologies. This research will investigate minimally invasive laser-based surgical interventions. The program activities include the following research areas:
1) Modeling and experiments on laser-induced tissue bioeffects from surgical lasers.
2) Development of multi-physics simulations for predicting the safety and efficacy of surgical lasers in different interventions.
3) Development of protocols to maximize safety of different interventional procedures.

We are seeking motivated, creative individuals interested in working within a team environment. The candidate would work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and clinicians in these activities and have several opportunities for cross-collaboration with other projects in the lab involving including minimally invasive and noninvasive technologies for medical interventions. The candidate will also work closely with scientific teams at the FDA to perform joint experiments. The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop new research in the areas of noninvasive and minimally invasive interventions. Lastly, the postdoctoral associate will assist in the development of research plans, research tasks, and the writing of grant proposals for federal agencies and non-profit sponsors. The postdoctoral associate will also be expected to submit peer-reviewed manuscripts and coordinate activities involving a number of project members.
