The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.

 

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics). The responsibilities are to conduct research exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic transmission between neurons using electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging. The candidate will be involved in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, circuit and live imaging approaches in the mammalian brain.

Function/Duties of Position

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics) in the von Gersdorff lab in the Vollum Institute.

Planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, and live imaging and computational approaches in the retina and/or CNS.

Manuscript preparation for individual projects and assisting other lab members with manuscripts as needed.

Assisting the PI and other lab members with grant application (data acquisition, writing assistance, editing) as needed. Preparing fellowship applications.

Traveling to national and international meetings to present on findings.

Helping to mentor and train junior members of the laboratory.

Required Qualifications Ph.D. in relevant field of study (Neuroscience and/or Biophysics or Computational Physics)Direct experience in studies of neurons, synapses and/or brain circuits.Knowledge and experience with computational and cellular techniques.Experience with manuscript preparation and writing skills for individual projects and statistical analysis of data are required. Preferred Qualifications Direct experience in studies of neuronal imaging/morphology.Imaging experience and work with live neurons and brain slices and analysis of patch clamp data.
