Postdoctoral Fellow for Sport Psychology
Position Number: POST40 Department: Counseling & Health Serv (Adm) Employment Type: Temporary - Full-time Months Per Year: 12 Essential Duties and Responsibilities: A Postdoctoral Fellow (“postdoc”) is a professional apprenticeship designed to provide recent Ph.D. recipients with an opportunity to develop further the research skills acquired in their doctoral programs or to learn new techniques and application of research to applied practice. This Postdoctoral Fellow position works under the supervision of a licensed professional, who serves as a mentor to the Fellow, and it is expected that the supervisor will impart the realities, and variety, of career in the field of psychology, and will encourage the Fellow’s exploration of opportunities within the field. Within the confines of the particular focus in sport psychology of this position, the Fellow functions with a considerable degree of independence. This position is fully embedded in Athletics and is designed for an individual who is seeking licensure and is interested in advanced training in providing mental health and sport performance services to collegiate student-athletes. The primary responsibilities of the Fellow include individual therapy, intake interviews with diagnostic assessment and report writing, crisis intervention, and outreach and consultation to student-athletes, coaches, and athletic staff. The postdoc will gain specialized experience and training in team and individual sport performance; providing consultation and outreach on clinical/wellness topic areas specific to student-athletes; and consult with Charlotte coaches, staff, sports medicine colleagues, and student-athletes regarding student behavior, mental health, performance enhancement, counseling and education. Minimum Experience / Education: The Postdoctoral appointee must have recently (within the last eight years) been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D.) Required qualifications include an earned doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA -accredited program and completion of an APA -accredited internship prior to the fellowship start date. Demonstration of a completed dissertation by the end of spring semester 2025 is required for consideration of applications. Preferred Education Skills and Experience: A successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical skills, clinical experience with young adults, competency serving a diverse client population, and desire to work within a multidisciplinary team. Preference will be given to candidates with clinical experience working with young adults/college students. Experience working with collegiate athletes and athletic departments is not required.
