The role involves designing and executing experiments, managing multiple projects, and collaborating with research teams. Key responsibilities include conducting field research, optimizing analytical methods, training students, and disseminating findings through publications and presentations. Proficiency in statistical analysis, lab instrumentation, and Microsoft Office is essential, along with a commitment to safety and compliance. Preferred skills include experience with advanced analytical techniques and leadership in laboratory management. Job Responsibilities1. Laboratory Management and Coordination (5%)Lead and coordinate lab activities, including scheduling, supply requisition, safety protocols, and ensuring compliance with regulations.Maintain laboratory certification through record-keeping, quality assurance, and regular audits. 2. Research on Bioactive Compounds and Nanotechnology (60%)Conduct research on bioactive compounds from food sources, focusing on metabolite identification and nanoencapsulation systems for microbiological safety.Investigate the genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors influencing bioactive compounds and volatiles in fruits and vegetables.Develop and optimize analytical methods for bioactive compounds and assess changes during postharvest handling. 3. Field and Greenhouse Research (5%)Perform field and greenhouse experiments related to nanotechnology applications in agriculture.Conduct field trials and collect samples across Texas as required.Study plant disease samples to understand the relationships between diseases, pests, and potential metabolites. 4. Collaboration and Research Dissemination (5%)Collaborate with research teams, industry partners, and other experts, including participation in the tomato-integrated project.Participate in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and dissemination of research findings through peer-reviewed publications. 5. Training, Mentorship, and Development (5%)Train and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, as well as visiting scientists.Develop and conduct hands-on training sessions and short courses for students and professionals. 6. Instrumentation and Troubleshooting (5%)Troubleshoot and maintain analytical instrumentation to ensure optimal performance. 7. Additional Duties (15%)Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Director of the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center. Required Education and experience: Ph.D. in the relevant discipline related to horticulture, food science or chemistry Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Excellent oral and written communication skills.Ability to independently design and execute experiments.Expertise in laboratory research techniques and the operation of analytical instrumentation. Ability to manage multiple projects effectively in a fast-paced environment. Strong teamwork and collaboration skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge and abilities in identifying, characterizing, and functionally analyzing volatile and bioactive compounds.Strong publication record in the relevant experience and skills in analytical work related to secondary metabolitesKnowledge of the relationship between abiotic/biotic stressors and secondary metabolite production, particularly in climate-resilient crops like tomatoes.Proven record of research productivity with publications in peer-reviewed journals.Proficiency with statistical analysis tools (e.g., SAS, R, XLstat, Multivariate analysis).Knowledge and abilities with advanced analytical techniques such as LC-MS, GC-MS, Raman spectroscopy, and NMR for compound identification and metabolic profiling.Familiarity with statistical modeling and computational methods for analyzing bioactive compounds.Expertise in assay development for new compounds and ingredients.Knowledge and abilities in managing laboratory personnel, inventory, and research projects.Strong background in preparing safety manuals, analytical methods, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).Abilities in disseminating research findings through reports, presentations, and grant proposals.Mentorship experience with students and lab members.
