The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. The school seeks candidates who have research interests related to one or more of the following and that have synergies with areas of current strength: ethics, judgment and decision-making, morality, motivation, self-regulation, social connection, or social justice. We also welcome applications from candidates working on other topics in line with the mission of the Batten School.
The school seeks candidates whose research interests relate to the core mission of the school – to generate new knowledge to solve the world’s toughest public policy challenges and educate ethical and effective leaders prepared to lead in a diverse and divided world. Opportunities for postdoctoral researchers include mentorship, sponsorship, access to resources and research infrastructure, and opportunities to collaborate with faculty at a truly interdisciplinary school.
The postdoctoral appointment is renewed annually with a target length of two years and is expected to begin in August 2025. Appointments involve independent research and/or opportunities for research collaboration with faculty, additional research funds, and teaching at the Batten School. Candidates should identify in their application 2 to 3 possible faculty within the school to serve as mentors with whom they would be matched during the postdoc. Although candidates have the opportunity to work with a number of Batten faculty, Gabrielle Adams, Benjamin Converse, Kyle Dobson, and Abigail Scholer are actively seeking postdoctoral collaboration.
Candidates who have received (or will receive) their terminal degree in a discipline with behavioral and policy relevance (e.g., social psychology, management, organizational behavior, etc.) by August 2025 are eligible to apply. A criterion for selection for this position is evidence of scholarly potential that could lead to a tenure-track appointment at a research university. Strong quantitative, communication, and project management skills are also required. In particular, sophisticated quantitative or methodological skills in big data, working with archival data sets, and familiarity with web-scraping languages (e.g., Python) are highly desired. Applicants with a track record of publication are preferred. Collaborative potential with Batten School mentors will be strongly considered.
