Postdoctoral Researcher
Position Summary:

Join the University of Dayton and be part of a community that values academic excellence, ethical leadership, and a commitment to the common good.

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position to study glacial lakes, mountain
geomorphology, and geohazards as part of a NASA-funded project. The postdoc will be responsible for analyzing hyperspectral EMIT data alongside Landsat and other satellite imagery. Key tasks include implementing GLAMBioLith RT analysis on EMIT data to derive suspended sediment abundances, designing and applying correlations with Landsat and other multispectral data, running necessary algorithms, validating outputs, and analyzing results. Candidates can familiarize themselves with the previous version of the model using the open-access code https://github.com/nsidc/HMA_GLAM_BioLithRT_5 or the paper https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/earthscience/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00267/full.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of scholarly excellence and will be expected to work independently. Candidates with experience in other types of satellite remote sensing data, and a desire to use EMIT data and other analytical techniques, are also encouraged to apply. This position offers an opportunity to expand your skill set and contribute new approaches to studying the impact of climate change on mountain glaciers and glacial lakes.

The appointment will be for 1 year, with continuation pending funding and progress. The position is eligible for benefits. Applicants are encouraged to ask questions to Dr. Umesh Haritashya (uharitashya1@udayton.edu).

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Earth or Environmental sciences/Engineering or related fields (e.g., geology, geography, geosciences, glaciology, civil engineering, computer science). ABD at the time of application is accepted, but Ph.D. is required by the start date.
• Candidate must have experience using GIS and remote sensing software and satellite data products in analyzing glacial lakes or glacier geomorphology.
• Experience in programming.
• Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Proficiency in using Matlab for data analysis.
• Experience in using EMIT data.
• Knowledge of radiative transfer modeling.
• Ability to use at least some combination of these software/modeling tools (e.g., Google Earth Engine,.
HEC-RAS, RAMMS, GeoClaw, COSI-Corr, SfM) and Python/R programming for data analysis.
• Experience in using/analyzing climate data.
• Ability to think creatively and work independently and in a team.
• Articulated interest in and flexibility necessary to respond quickly to time-sensitive research requirements.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Record of publication as lead author in a high-impact top-tier journal.
• Experience in writing or contributing to successful research proposals.

Special Instructions to Applicants:
