As a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy of Oregon Health & Science University in the area of biology of gametes and preimplantation embryos this researcher will study meiosis 1 and mechanisms of haploidy in mammalian gametes and embryos using various embryological, molecular, immunocytochemical and cell culture techniques. This research is critical for developing functional gametes for treatment of infertility and defining safety and efficacy strategies of novel cell therapies for in vitro fertilization. Embryology experiments will require intermittent late night and early morning (12am-6am) coverage which is outside of typical work day. Flexibility and professionalism at these hours are paramount.
This candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, maintaining laboratory records; gathering, organizing and summarizing data; writing and publishing manuscripts; presenting results at seminars and conferences, writing experimental protocols; preparing various reports; contributing to grant applications and progress reports; training new personnel and performing a variety of duties which require flexibility, judgment, and unique experience in the field of stem cell and developmental biology.
The Postdoctoral researcher will be a project leader at the Center for Embryonic Cell & Gene Therapy (CECGT, http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/research/centers-institutes/embryonic-cell-gene-therapy-center/). This research center reports to the Chief Research Officer and is a critical scientific center at OHSU; this position is responsible for communications with high level internal and external personnel and must operate with great accuracy and efficiency. Function/Duties of Position Key Responsibilities & Performance StandardsTechnical Researh:
Independently conduct technical laboratory research to assess ploidy and
haploidy in mammalian gametes, embryos and stem cells. These
responsibilities include: collect oocytes and conduct assisted reproductive
techniques in laboratory models, utilization of novel embryo manipulation
techniques including somatic cell nuclear transfer; isolation and
characterization of blastomeres, ES cells and iPS cells, produce chimeric and
transgenic animals, day to day maintenance of embryo and cell cultures,
records and laboratory analysis by molecular, histological and
immunocytochemical methods.
Data Collection/Analysis/Record Keeping:
Collect and analyze scientific data pertinent to the research projects. Manage
and maintain detailed animal records and all research related information in an
easily identifiable manner for current and historical documentation.
Report Preparation and Literature Research:
Prepare reports containing analytical, descriptive, and evaluative content that
will be submitted for publication or for contribution to grant applications,
progress reports, presentations at national and international meetings, etc.
Conduct research of literature and database analysis.
Personnel Supervision:
Serve as lead-person for laboratory research assistants; train staff in research
techniques and protocols; delegate tasks and oversee work of students and
other support staff.
Material Presentation:
Present research findings to fellow investigators and collaborative scientists;
attend professional meetings.
Required Qualifications Ph.D. degree with major courses in molecular biology, cell biology, and embryology.Strong background in mammalian gamete, preimplantation embryo and pluripotent stem cell biology. Excellent communication skills and first-author publications on related topics in peer-reviewed journals are required. Preferred Qualifications Degree in Developmental/Stem cell BiologyHands-on experience in gamete and embryo micromanipulations, stem cell culture, next-gen sequencing is highly desirable.
