Power Electronics/Machine Learning Researcher

Eaton’s CTO Corporate Technology Office division is currently seeking a Power Electronics/Machine Learning Researcher.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $112500.0 - $165000.0 a year.

What you’ll do:

This is a unique opportunity to make a significant contribution to a transformational project developing artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) aided model-based systems engineering methods.  The ultimate goal is to design innovative power electronics solutions for transportation electrification applications through the development of advanced computing methods.  The incumbent will join a world-class research team including internal and external partners to deliver on research and commercialization projects jointly funded by Eaton and government research agencies.

In this function you will:
•    Plans and executes research activities in AI/ML aided power electronics design and tool development including coordination of the activities of internal and external research partners. 
•    Uses state of the art concepts to advance the technology base, develop competencies, and identify strategies for creating competitive advantage through design automation.
•    Remain current on relevant scientific and industry trends and state-of-the-art techniques
•    Be knowledgeable of the state-of-the-art concepts and principles of AI/ML aided design and well versed in various power electronics modeling and simulation tools.(Position Criteria)
•    Be knowledgeable in the fundamental concepts and principles of power electronics including power electronics design, module packaging, thermal management, manufacturing methods and validation testing.
•    Be familiar with the state of the art in power electronics technology, packaging of wide bandgap devices, and high frequency passive components.
•    Apply sound experimental protocols required for research and product development
•    Interface with external partners on collaborative programs.
•    Presents research findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders to inform technology strategy, aid deployment of capabilities and support investment decisions
•    Contribute towards new proposals to external funding agencies
•    Research and implement appropriate ML algorithms and tools
•    Develop machine learning applications per requirements
•    Select appropriate datasets and data representation methods
•    Train and retrain ML models when necessary
•    Run machine learning tests and experiments
•    Perform statistical analysis and eExtend existing ML libraries and frameworks
•    fine-tuning using test results

*    This role requires working on-site daily at our Southfield, Michigan facility.  Relocation (within US only) is available for a qualified candidate. Due to ITAR compliance, candidates requiring visa assistance are not eligible for this role.  

Qualifications:

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

•  PhD degree in Electrical / Electronics Engineering degree from an accredited institution.
•  5+ years of experience (academic or postgraduate) with Power Electronics.
•  Previous experience in power electronics design, modeling and simulation tools and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning aided design.
•  Access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.  Candidates currently requiring Visa sponsorship now or in the future are not eligible for this role. 
 

Preferred Qualifications:


•  Experience with electric vehicle components, systems and knowledge of transportation markets.   
•  Solid understanding of ML and Deep Learning concepts. (Supervised, Unsupervised, Reinforcement Learning)
•  Demonstrated experience in training and deploying ML and DL models using various tools frameworks like pytorch, pytorch lightning, Keras, tensorflow, numpy, pandas, scikit learn etc. (selection of algorithms, hyperparameter tuning, local/cloud-based training etc.)
•  Knowledge of circuit simulation and mathematical tools such as Matlab, Simulink, PLECS etc. PLECS, MATLAB, Saber.
•  Experience Leading complex R&D projects.
•  Solid foundation in Linear Algebra, statistics, and probability.
•  Good understanding of various optimization algorithms.
•  Good Python coding skills. 

Skills:

•    Prior work experience in Aerospace or Transportation industry
•    Excellent English written and oral communication skills including formal presentation skills. 
•    Ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams.
•    Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.
