Research Department Manager

Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ABB’s success with technology, software, product, and system development. Each day, you will identify and implement innovative solutions to relevant problems. You will also showcase your expertise by providing ideas and by being able to work both independently and as a part of a Research & Development (R&D) team.The work model for the role is onsite in Raleigh, NC• Scouting new technologies, creating proposals, and getting buy-in from sponsors.• Assessing new technologies for a variety of applications (power supplies, grid connected converters, UPS, EV chargers, motor drives, and more).• Developing technical requirements and creating new designs.• Designing electronic circuits and printed circuit boards.• Develop firmware for low- and high-level functions of power converters.• Selecting components and engaging suppliers.• Building and testing simulation models and hardware demonstrators.• Building test assemblies, running experiments, and recording test data.• Analyzing test data and optimizing the solutions.• Preparing internal and external technical reports, presentations, and publications.• Writing invention disclosures and providing technical inputs for patent filings.• Representing ABB in professional conferences and other events.• Contributing to strategic planning activities

Qualifications for the role

Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in the field of Power Electronics preferred; Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering Power Electronics with minimum 2 years’ experience required. Hands-on experience with building electrical circuits and ability to solder and re-work printed circuit boards; Ability to use oscilloscopes, probes, meters, and another basic lab equipment. Experience with writing firmware code for DSPs, MCUs, and FPGAs (c, c++, Verilog). Experience with PCB design, especially using Altium or Cadence software. Experience with power electronics integration design, including CAD software and FEA thermal simulations software. Previous experience with writing proposals and securing funding for research. Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, work in international teams, and lead teams and manage projects or work packages within a bigger project. Demonstrated skills in effective communication, presentation of results, and networking. Ability to travel up to 15% travel. Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
