Opportunity Summary
The Power Plant Technician – Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting electrical, control, and instrumentation systems to ensure safe and efficient plant operations. This role involves performing diagnostic functions, operating equipment during various modes, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The technician will also participate in the Power Plant Technician Progression Program, contributing to ongoing professional development and technical expertise.
Primary Duties
Monitors systems and equipment in compliance with standard operating procedures, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Communicates with the Control Room Operator regarding equipment start and stop times, abnormal conditions, corrective actions, and equipment checks, providing detailed reports on conditions found and actions taken. Operates systems, equipment, and components during start-up, normal operation, shutdown, and standby modes, ensuring procedures are followed to maintain safe and efficient operations. Performs operational diagnostics and analytical functions on systems, equipment, and components to identify potential issues and optimize performance. Isolates and restores systems, equipment, and components, strictly adhering to work scope, safety procedures, and industry best practices. Utilizes plant computer systems to monitor work backlog, track job progress, and input work order data, ensuring accurate and timely updates. Collects operational data and maintains comprehensive logs, ensuring documentation is accurate and up-to-date for regulatory and operational purposes. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical equipment, diagnosing faults and making repairs in accordance with safety and operational guidelines. Performs switching and grounding on medium- and high-voltage systems, ensuring safe isolation and re-energization of equipment. Interprets electrical and control elementary diagrams for troubleshooting, applying knowledge to resolve system faults effectively. Conducts basic switchgear and breaker repairs, performing maintenance and replacing components as necessary to ensure reliable operation. Completes the Power Plant Technician Progression Program within two years, demonstrating a commitment to professional growth and technical proficiency. Adheres to all safety and environmental regulations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company policies. Performs emergency response activities as required, responding quickly and effectively to minimize risk and ensure safety during plant emergencies. Performs general housekeeping duties as necessary, maintaining a clean and safe work environment in compliance with safety standards. Working Relationships
The Power Plant Technician – E&I reports to the Maintenance Manager and responds to directions from the Operations Manager, and Plant Manager.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
Regular scheduled workweek is based on a 12-hour rotating shift. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
Compensation
Initial starting rate of pay is $39.56 per hour.
Job Qualifications
Ability to comprehend procedures and instructions relevant to the assigned area, typically developed through completion of a high school education. Associate degree in a related science, engineering, or technical field, or an equivalent technical qualification. Three to five years of relevant experience in fossil fuel power plants, refineries, or similar heavy industrial facilities. Hands-on experience in industrial or utility environments, involving the maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of complex systems. Proven experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and calibrating instrumentation, electrical, and control systems in industrial settings, including installation and troubleshooting of various components. Proven experience working with low-, medium-, and high-voltage power systems, including maintenance, testing, and repair. Proficiency in diagnosing and resolving issues with Bailey DCS systems or comparable distributed control systems. Proficiency in using standard computer applications for technical documentation, data analysis, and reporting. Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to document work clearly and collaborate effectively with teams. Ability to achieve passing scores on Power Plant Technician and E&I entrance tests, demonstrating technical aptitude, foundational knowledge, and readiness for advanced electrical and instrumentation work.
