Power Plant- Utility Operator

The North Tonawanda Cogeneration facility, located in North Tonawanda, NY, is a 55-megawatt combined-cycle cogeneration plant. It features one GE Frame 6 gas turbine generator, one HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator), and one GE steam turbine generator, all supported by a diverse array of essential auxiliary equipment. This facility not only ensures efficient and reliable power generation but also serves as a vital source of electricity for the surrounding area, contributing to the region's energy needs.

Opportunity Summary

The Power Plant Utility Operator is responsible for participating in a training program to become a qualified Auxiliary Plant Operator. The Utility Operator performs station shift operations and maintenance, including startup and shutdown of plant components, and conducts routine plant tours to ensure equipment is in order while prioritizing safety. Additionally, the Utility Operator assists with chemical handling and equipment switching, maintains housekeeping standards, and performs preventive maintenance. The Utility Operator collaborates with team members and departments to support the facility's goals, operating under established procedures with occasional complexities.

Primary Duties

Participate in training program and will become qualified as an Auxiliary Plant Operator Perform all station shift operation and maintenance, including start-up and shut down of main plant components and auxiliaries Conduct routine tours of the plant to inspect equipment, provide feedback to the Control Room Operator and to other employees Comply with all site safety requirements and procedures. Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective actions as necessary Assist with conduct of bulk offloads of plant chemicals as required Performs all plant switching and tagging of equipment in accordance with approved procedures and prudent operations and maintenance practices. Perform and maintain housekeeping standards and duties Perform routine preventive and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment; support corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised Perform other duties necessary to fulfill plant requirements Display routine proficiency improvements towards becoming qualified as an Auxiliary Plant Operator Communicate with other company personnel onsite and at other locations  Assist other team members and work with all departments to support the Middletown Energy Center facility in achieving their goals Operate from established and well-known procedures under general directions Encounter recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. 

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position requires working 12-hour rotating shifts with the possibility of overtime, weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The initial hourly rate of pay will range from $28.00 to $36.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school Some power plant experience in operations and/or maintenance is desired Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc. and associated maintenance functions is desired Knowledge of and ability to understand fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC&DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermal dynamics, and chemistry Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plants Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists and slings Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at all times
