In this role:
You will lead the concept studies at the tender stage, and working with other engineering disciplines, develop solutions that satisfy the client’s needs and conform to requirements, such as Grid Code connection agreements.
Once the project is secured you will manage the external resources who will undertake the full set of electrical system studies, validate the output, and act as the main technical interface to the client in this area of the design.
Grid Solutions, a GE Renewable Energy business, serves customers globally with over 13,000 employees. We provide power utilities and industries worldwide with equipment, systems and services to bring power reliably and efficiently from the point of generation to end power consumers. Grid Solutions is focused on addressing the challenges of the energy transition by enabling the safe and reliable connection of renewable and distributed energy resources to the grid. We electrify the world with advanced grid technologies and accelerate the energy transition.Job Description
The Grid System Integration (GSI) business team is a turnkey project business that works with its internal and external partners to engineer, procure, construct and commission a wide range of projects associated with the bulk transmission of electrical power and management of electrical power grids.
These projects typically include:
New high voltage transmission substationsExpansion and reinforcement of existing transmission substations and networksOn and Offshore substations to facilitate windfarm connections and other renewable technologies.Network compensation and stability projectsEnergy Storage ProjectsFor a number of Customers, this work will include developing solutions from first principles or undertaking a range of electrical studies to demonstrate that the design being proposed or delivered meets the required design parameters. This role is to support those activities both at the Tender Stage and the Project Delivery Stage.
At the Tender stage, you will play a key role supporting the Engineering team to develop the concept solutions needed to demonstrate competence to the Customer and secure the project. This will generally include undertaking the following tasks:
Understanding the customers’ power system requirements, regulatory constrains and standards that need to be adhered too.Developing the initial system architecture and advising the Customer on areas of difficulty or where designs can be optimised.Undertake provisional load-flow studies, with PowerFactory DIgSILENT or similar a software tool, for the purpose of initial system design and equipment sizing.Undertake provisional RAM Studies (Reliability, Availability and Maintainability) to ensure the proposed solution meets the Clients expectations.Work closely with the mechanical-electrical teams and ensure that the practical realisation of the Power System design is an efficient and cost effective as possible.Manage any third-party resources, engage to undertake more detailed studies, such as harmonic analysis, required to further develop the proposed design, including the validation of the work produced.Engage with the Customer, as required, to articulate the Power System solution and answer questions or queries that may be raised. You will continue to support the Project as it moves into the delivery stage and work closely with the execution teams to manage the full set of Studies needed to confirm compliance. This will generally include undertaking the following tasks:
Identifying the studies to be performed, preparing procurement specifications, and working closely with the Sourcing team to engage the entity that will perform the full set of project studies.Once a suitable consultant has been engaged, set them to work, answer queries, monitor progress and validate the work that they produce.Continue to be the main point of contact to the Customer for all topics related to Power System Studies and answer questions or queries that may be raised.Manage the Customer approval process and ensure that the Customers comments are answered in a comprehensive and timely manner.Continue to work closely with the mechanical-electrical teams and ensure complete alignment between the Power System design and the practical realization of the project.Requirements:
An MSC (or equivalent) in Power Engineering. (Or equivalent experience)Demonstrable experience working in a role where you are undertaking electrical study work on high voltage transmission systems, and have a strong working knowledge of the following topics:Electrical Load Flow and Equipment SizingReactive Power ManagementHarmonic ManagementAvailability StudiesInsulation CoordinationBe a competent user of a power system analysis software application such as PowerFactory DIgSILENT (or equivalent)Be a competent user of a RAM Studies (Reliability, Availability andMaintainability) software application such as ReliaSoft - BlockSIM (or equivalent)Desired Characteristics:
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the power transmission business and the way in which electrical power grids are operated in order to successfully transmit power while remaining stable. You will also have a working knowledge of related standards and documents, such as the UK Grid Code, in order to understand the design constraints that need to be adhered too.You will be confident to discuss these complex topics with Customers and Consultants and be able to propose solutions or improvements needed to create successful concepts that can then be delivered. You will also be able to bridge the gap between the system studies and practical design realisation, and be able to provide guidance to the electrical-mechanical teams who will create the detail design. You will be a team player, with good communication and interpersonal skills, be capable of self-management, and have a high degree of flexibility, resilience and a self-learning attitude.Additional InformationRelocation Assistance Provided: No
