Job Summary

Assist in performing all types of work in transmission and distribution facilities. The work may include testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining existing equipment, commissioning new equipment, and/or working in a field environment around energized or de-energized components.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Communication and interpersonal skills: develop skills to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with internal and external customers; to assist in the preparation of technical reports and papers; to demonstrate the ability to be a team player; to relate to people in an open, friendly, and sincere manner.

Decision making and business awareness characteristics: develop decision-making skills based on sound judgment and job knowledge; develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the local organizational unit.

Technical proficiency: develop technical skills acquired from an Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology; to gain knowledge of standards, codes, and regulations relevant to area of assignment; to gain knowledge with pertinent equipment, material, systems, and business processes; to assist employees in handling defined portions of routine problems when beneficial to AEP; to develop basic computer literacy, knowledge, and skills.

Leadership and guidance: develop skills to perform work activities as assigned and coached by higher level employees; to demonstrate ability to work with others in supplying information, and to seek assistance as necessary.

Planning and organization ability: develop skills to plan work in accordance with AEP standard planning practices; to prioritize routine work to meet the demands of the company; and to maintain accurate records.

Problem solving and initiative: develop technical knowledge skills and experience to resolve problems encountered in assigned work; to use initiative in looking for opportunities to improve the process and increase job knowledge/technical skills; to seek out, compile, analyze, and interpret information necessary to perform work activities and solve problems.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Must be enrolled into a qualified two-year associate degree program in electrical / electronic engineering technology.

Must be at least 18 years old. Must successfully complete all pre-employment selection procedures including drug screen, physical and back ground check.

Must be physically able and willing to perform work in a field environment. Must successfully complete the P&C Physical Abilities Test (PAT).

Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to work in teams.

Must be able to work in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Must be able to follow both written and verbal instruction.

Must be able to provide both written and verbal instruction to others when necessary. Must be able to interpret data and apply information from drawings, instruction manuals, diagrams, and associated documents.

Must be able to deal with customers and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must be willing to travel. (Travel may be required to complete work assignments.) Must have working knowledge of computers and computer software applications. Basic knowledge of electricity, preferred.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Temporary work experience while applicant pursues a degree in electrical / electronic engineering technology.

*Days of the week and scheduled hours may vary due to the nature of the work being performed and/or the crew that the intern is assigned to work with and/or the student’s school schedule.
