Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with over 900 lawyers across the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Practice Innovation Analyst in the Information Technology department, reporting to the Director of Practice Technology and AI Innovation.
The Practice Technology & Innovation team is central to this mission, helping the Firm identify, implement, and promote transformative technologies that improve workflows, empower lawyers, and deliver exceptional results for our clients.
The role can reside in the Dallas, Houston, New York or Washington, DC office with hybrid work capabilities and will work with lawyers, practice group leaders, and technology teams to identify and implement transformative legal technologies. This role is focused on scanning the horizon for emerging tools, fostering collaboration across teams, and driving the adoption of solutions that improve efficiency, elevate client service, and support the firm’s strategic objectives.
This role plays a key part in evaluating and piloting cutting-edge tools, like AI-powered drafting platforms, workflow automation solutions, and collaboration tools, ensuring they align with the needs of lawyers and clients. Key responsibilities of this position include :
Driving Innovation and Technology Adoption
+ Scan the Legal Tech Landscape: Monitor trends and emerging tools to identify the best new legal technologies for the firm.
+ Pilot and Evaluate Technologies: Lead proofs of concept (POCs) for cutting-edge tools like AI drafting platforms and workflow automation solutions, ensuring successful outcomes through lawyer and client feedback.
+ Develop Business Cases: Articulate the value of proposed solutions by drafting business cases focused on ROI, efficiency gains, and client impact.
+ Promote Practical AI Use Cases: Help lawyers and staff adopt tools like Microsoft Copilot by identifying meaningful applications, such as drafting, summarizing, and automating repetitive tasks.
Collaborating Across Teams
+ Work Closely with Lawyers and Stakeholders: Partner with attorneys and practice groups to identify challenges and opportunities for innovation.
+ Bridge the Gap: Act as a liaison between firm practitioners, IT teams, and Security teams to ensure seamless communication between the technical and non-technical to deliver solutions that meet practical legal needs.
+ Foster Knowledge Sharing: Support the development of resources and guides to help teams maximize the value of legal technology tools.
+ Support Firm Strategy: Support team and firm-wide initiatives and special projects focused on legal technology roll-out and change management.
Enhancing Client Service and Efficiency
+ Enable Smarter Workflows: Collaborate with teams to design and implement tech-driven legal workflows that improve accuracy, save time, and elevate client service.
+ Deliver Client-Centric Innovation: Identify ways to leverage technology to add value for clients, such as automation tools or enhanced collaboration platforms.
+ Streamline Processes: Review and optimize existing tools and processes to ensure they align with the evolving needs of lawyers and clients.
Horizon Scanning and Thought Leadership
+ Stay Informed: Monitor the latest developments in AI, automation, and other transformative technologies shaping the legal industry.
+ Contribute to Thought Leadership: Support the firm’s visibility in the market by contributing to case studies, publications, and internal reports on innovation.
+ Engage in Industry Events: Represent Akin Gump at legal technology conferences and events to bring back insights and maintain a forward-looking perspective and innovative edge.
Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
+ JD preferred, or equivalent legal education or experience (e.g., paralegal, junior associate, or legal operations professional)
+ 3-5 years of experience in a legal technology environment, either within a Law Firm, In house or vendor environment
+ Familiarity with legal workflows in transactional, regulatory, and litigation practices
+ Interest in transitioning into legal technology and innovation, with a passion for exploring emerging technology and processes
+ Familiarity with legal technology tools such as document automation platforms, workflow tools, and AI-powered solutions
+ Familiarity with traditional law firm document management, and other legal specific systems/platforms from an end user and workflow perspective
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and a willingness to learn low-code/no-code tools (e.g., SharePoint, QuickBase)
+ Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new tools, platforms, and systems
+ Understanding of Product Management and system administration principles
+ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly assess new tools and determine their fit for the firm
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex ideas to diverse audiences
+ Demonstrates effective and professional interpersonal skills to develop relationships and communicate across all levels and departments, more specifically with attorneys and firm leadership
+ Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
+ Service-oriented mindset, with a focus on delivering practical solutions that create measurable impact
+ Curiosity and adaptability, with a passion for learning about emerging technologies and their potential applications
The anticipated base salary range for this position in New York and Washington, DC is $110,000 to $175,000.. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, years of relevant experience, certifications or other professional licenses held, job-related knowledge and skills, business needs, and the location from which the work will be performed. Additionally, salary or hourly wages may be only part of the total compensation package, which may also include a full range of health and other insurance benefits, financial and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility), a discretionary bonus, and various paid time off benefits.
