**Introduction** Generative AI models are being rapidly adopted in various domains due to their efficiency in synthesising knowledge. Specialised hardware and software frameworks may be needed for efficient training, fine-tuning and inference future Gen AI models. Designing systems for future Generative AI workloads is a complex task that will involve testing new hypotheses and will require new studies. It will also require designing experiments such as benchmarking of system technologies (compute, network and storage). We offer a fully-funded 4-year PhD position at the intersection between computer systems design and AI as part of a new initiative between IBM Research Europe and University College Dublin (UCD). The PhD project will be jointly supervised by Assistant Professor Dimitris Chatzopoulos ([1] [1] [1] https://people.ucd.ie/dimitris.chatzopoulos) and the staff of the Next Generation Systems team at IBM Research Europe in Dublin. The student selected will be employed by IBM for the duration of the PhD and be a registered student at UCD with the following benefits: • Access to resources and expertise both at IBM Research and UCD • Research experience in both private and public sectors • A substantial PhD Salary (>40,000 euro) • Full UCD PhD programme fees (EU or non-EU level) paid References Visible links 1. The research will focus on developing the algorithms and experiments required to sample and navigate a complex design space with multiple objectives, and applying them to find new GenAI system designs that optimize for various objectives for given workloads. As part of this PhD program your responsibilities will include: fulfilling you obligation as registered student of UCD, performing research work (state of the art evaluation, devising novel solutions, etc.), writing research papers, interacting with international teams at IBM and UCD, and prototyping of ideas for evaluation and demonstration purposes. **Required technical and professional expertise** * Machine Learning and AI basics: Large Language Models architectures and Machine learning fundamentals; programming libraries for AI/ML such as Pytorch. * Operating Systems and Distributed System Design basic concepts: Memory management, Networking, Databases, etc. * Cloud technologies fundamentals: Containers, Kubernetes, Helm. * Basic programming skills: Python * Clear interest in performing basic research work, including: evaluation of existing literature, ideation of alternative solutions, writing research papers. * Ability to move quickly from idea to software prototype for evaluation and demonstration * Required Education: A minimum 2.1 grade (or equivalent) in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Maths/Stats, Physics, Engineering, or similar technical discipline. This typically means achieving minimum 60% or higher in the award of the BSc or MSc (Second Class Honours, Upper Division). * Language requirements: Non-native English speakers require IELTS at least 6.5 (with at least 6 in all components) or equivalent (see link for details on test equivalence). **Preferred technical and professional experience** * Hardware for machine learning: Knowledge of GPU architectures and familiarity with GPU programming. * Programming skills: Golang, C/C++, code versioning such as git. * Knowledge of virtualization technologies.
