Job Title:          Pre-School Teacher I/II

Department:    Clare Swan Early Learning Center (CSELC)

Reports To:      Education Manager (I), Staff Development Manager (II)

Supervises:       None

FLSA Status:    Non-Exempt

Pay Grade:        N3 (I), N4 (II)

General Functions:

The Pre-School Teacher I/II is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing and engaging environment for preschool-aged children. This role focuses on delivering high-quality early childhood education aimed at enhancing children’s social skills, school readiness, and fostering a strong sense of pride in their traditional Alaska Native culture and heritage. The Pre-School Teacher I/II must be able to effectively manage a dynamic and sometimes chaotic classroom environment, supervising multiple activities simultaneously with patience, organization, and care.

 

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Support the development and delivery of lesson plans that promote children’s education, health, social, and emotional growth.Evaluate children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and language development using a range of screening and observation tools.Create developmentally and culturally responsive lesson plans that challenge, support, and address each child’s individual learning goals and developmental needs following the Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum and Clare Swan Cultural Curriculum guidelines.Apply a range of teaching strategies to support educational and developmental goals, addressing physical, emotional, social, cultural, cognitive and language needs of each child.Implement appropriate discipline and guidance techniques including redirection, positive reinforcement, and the establishment of clear and acceptable boundaries. Foster a healthy, safe and secure learning environment by setting consistent limits, applying appropriate guidance techniques, and promoting a culture of mutual respect among children and adults.Offer training to parents and staff through role modeling, guided discussions, and various instructional methods.Serve as an active member of Clare Swan Early Learning team by participating in staff meetings, training, planning sessions and problem-solving activities.Conduct two home visits per year to meet with parents or guardians and gain a better understanding of each child’s home environment.Ensure accurate completion of all documentation, including home visit forms, parent/teacher conference forms, lesson plans, work samples and transition forms.

Teacher I

Ability to foster open, friendly, and cooperative relationships with families, encouraging program participation and supporting the development of strong, nurturing parent-child bonds.Ability to create a sense of security and trust in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers through warmth, support, and comfort, while building strong, caring relationships with them.Ability to offer children experiences and opportunities fostering curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, creativity, and a strong sense of self and belonging.Ability to conduct developmental screenings to assess student’s motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills.Ability to mentor and train Teacher Apprentices. Proficient in using ChildPlus and the center’s curriculum website, Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum and able to assist others with these tools for their children’s learning.Consistent and reliable attendance is expected to support classroom continuity.Maintain confidentiality in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures. Perform other duties as needed and assigned.

 

Teacher II

Consistently perform all duties of a Teacher I with a high degree of proficiency.Ability to manage classroom operations including, planning, implementing activities, maintaining the environment, and supervising children, staff and volunteers.Ability to implement program curriculum for pre-school classrooms.Ensure adherence to Head Start performance standards for the education component by following guidance from supervisor and department manager.Provide mentorship to Teacher I and teacher apprentices both in the classroom and with lesson plans and reports.Ability to independently manage classroom tasks and ensuring plans, documents, and reports submitted on time.Proficient in using ChildPlus and the center’s curriculum website, Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum and able to assist others with these tools for their children’s learning.Skilled in initiating and leading both individual and group learning activities.Consistent and reliable attendance is expected to support classroom continuity.Maintain confidentiality in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures. Perform other duties as needed and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Teacher I

High school diploma or GED.Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) or level 7 on the SEED career ladder.6 months of experience teaching or working in childcare.Experience working in a Head Start/Early Head Start environment.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian communityMust provide a copy of current Health Report.Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory state and federal background check. 

 

Teacher II

Associate’s degree in early childhood education, equivalent college coursework in Early Childhood Education or Level 8 on the SEED career ladder. Relevant experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis with a valid CDA and an education plan.  Three years of experience teaching or working in childcare.Experience working in a Head Start/Early Head Start environment.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.Must provide a copy of current Health Report.Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory state and federal background check. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Valid Alaska driver’s license and be insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.Former or current Head Start Parents are encouraged to apply.

 

Work Environment:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

Frequently be physically active without getting tired, including active play and activities.  The ability to be on your feet for long periods of time. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner. Able to get up and down off the floor with ease, including kneeling, bending, squatting.  The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.  Frequently exposed to bodily fluids.  Possible exposure to noise, and contaminants such as cleaning solvents. Routinely exposed to outdoor conditions including inclement weather.
