POSITION SUMMARY

This position is part of the system senior leadership team (SLT), reporting directly to the President & CEO, accountable for establishing performance goals and ensuring that the academic organization meets its broad operational and growth targets across all lines of business. As a vital member of the SLT, the President of Academic Delivery will participate in our “One Team” approach to setting the strategic direction and driving success for the organization.

This role will lead academic strategy, academic relationships management, operational improvements, academic market growth initiatives, efficiency opportunities for the entire academic delivery system to position Banner for success and ensure a collaborative, open, and inclusive work environment focused on quality outcomes, superior service orientation, and financial results.

The position requires frequent collaboration with senior leaders and academic partners to ensure Banner optimizes resource utilization and demonstrates measurable improvements. This role will build relationships across the system with executives to promote interdisciplinary involvement and accountability around strategic and operational improvement. This position also serves as a role model for team members and academic partners, representing Banner in a positive manner both within and outside the organization. Primarily focused on the success of all academic operations and partnerships, the focus areas of this role include:

Academic Partnerships - Ensure that we fulfill the requirements of our Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) with the University of Arizona (UA) while thoughtfully evolving our tri-partite mission of clinical advancement, education and research. Explore our other academic partnerships (e.g. Arizona State University “ASU”) to realize the full potential.

Integrated Care Delivery -  Banner provides both clinical care and insurance coverage and success is driven by leaning into value-based metrics to achieve its goals. This requires attention to access, connectivity across our network, affordability and streamlined services. Banner’s culture relies on a One Team approach and all senior leaders must work across the organization to ensure that system goals are achieved. This requires strong communication, collaboration, and team problem solving. We thrive by supporting each other.

Clinical Excellence, Medical Education and Research -  Drive growth and sustainability in Banner’s tripartite academic mission. Best in class care is the focal point in our key service lines including cardiovascular, neuroscience, orthopedics, cancer, and women and children’s programs. Further developing our Graduate Medical Education programs and the training of 1,300 residents and fellows in distinguished programs to achieve a robust physician pipeline for Banner and the state of Arizona. Lead and nurture research opportunities that make a meaningful impact on the communities that we serve.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

Partner and Provide Strategic Thought-Leadership As a key member of the SLT, the President of Academic Delivery will participate in our “One Team” approach to setting the enterprise's strategic direction and driving success for the organization.

Drive Performance and Accountability Establish performance goals and ensure that the academic organizations meet broad operational and growth targets across all lines of business. Leads senior leaders across the organization, fostering a culture of accountability. Maintains an effective budgeting and capital planning discipline in conjunction with operational management to meet planned revenues, expenses, and profit goals.

Inspire and Communicate Creates, collaborates, coordinates, and expertly communicates an inspiring direction for the organization, including providing clear expectations and innovative and inclusive solutions to ensure the achievement of desired and integrated strategic business objectives and outcomes, including, but not limited to, growth, customer experience, financial accountability, and patient care. Actively create an environment of understanding and trust by participating in two-way communication with those we serve, physicians, university leadership, and employees.

Resolve Complex Issues and Build High Functioning Teams Provides direction and counsel to identify and resolve the most complex issues and problems impacting initiatives and operations. Requires and demonstrates alignment between teams. Build and support effective collegial relationships with applicable internal and external stakeholders and organizations, ensuring and fostering a high level of collaboration. Develop partnerships, coordinate activities, review work, exchange information, and resolve problems. Promotes and models positive relationships among various entities. Provides a system-wide lens to drive holistic solutions and respectfully offers unique perspectives for collaboration partners.

Coach and Grow Talent Pipelines Develops team members to ensure continued professional growth and talent management to support the development and long-term success of the organization.

Drive Tech Solutions, Efficiency, and Standardization Leans into advanced technology solutions and leads process standardization, prioritization, and best practice implementation to optimize efficiencies and partnership. Oversees developing, implementing, and consistently applying effective organizational policies and practices.

Innovate and Accelerate Ensures the integration of new and innovative operations and services by providing leadership that maximizes management’s contributions and assures timely decision-making reflective of the system's mission, vision, and values.

Promote Integrity and Compliance Maintains an effective internal control environment to ensure that assets are safeguarded, policies and operating procedures are followed, necessary controls are effective and efficient, proper compliance with existing laws and regulations is achieved, and operations comply with the legal and regulatory parameters in which it operates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

Advanced degree required. Physician, Master’s Degree in Business, Health Services Administration or a related field.

Strong knowledge of academic healthcare strategy and operations obtained through a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience, including a minimum of five years senior management level experience within an academic health care system setting. 

Senior strategic and operational leadership experience in a large, highly-matrixed, academic healthcare delivery system in an executive-level position. Proven track record of driving academic strategic and performance outcomes and accomplishing organizational goals. Experience anticipating and responding to the needs of internal and external customers. Proven experience managing fiscally sound, profitable, efficient, and responsible operations. Strong financial and business acumen and knowledge of budgeting and forecasting methodologies. Skilled in driving strategy, resolving conflict, effectively engaging leaders, employees, and stakeholders to build partnerships, achieve strategic initiatives, and attain organizational goals.

Managing problems and situations where uncertainty is inherent; constructing new and innovative solutions for complex and varying problems by considering the larger perspective or context; mentoring and coaching physician and administrative leaders by providing open and honest feedback that results in enhanced performance outcomes; developing and implementing strategic goals and initiatives that demonstrate a strong commitment to organizational success; effectively allocating resources in order to accomplish organizational goals; quickly assessing and assimilating organizational and industry information to make appropriate decisions without unnecessary delays; negotiating win-win scenarios with outside vendors/partners while representing the organization in the best possible light; developing collaborative relationships with internal and/or external strategic partners and/or other applicable parties.
