Position Overview:
We are seeking a results-driven Principal to support the implementation and ongoing management of our Absolute Return Strategies (ARS) investment program. Reporting to the Managing Director of the ARS program, the Principal will play a key role in executing investment decisions, managing external relationships, constructing a world-class absolute return portfolio, and mentoring junior team members. The ideal candidate will have experience in alternative investments, with a strong focus on operational execution, portfolio construction and monitoring, and team leadership.

As Principal, you will work closely with the Managing Director and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team, while enhancing your skills and making a meaningful impact within a leading institutional investment organization.
Key Responsibilities:Implementation of Investment Strategy:Collaborate with the Managing Director to execute the ARS investment strategy, ensuring alignment with the organization's overall portfolio objectives.Drive the implementation of capital allocations to ARS strategies, including onboarding new managers and coordinating internal processes.Ensure timely and accurate execution of rebalancing activities, liquidity management, and allocation adjustments.Manager Selection and Due Diligence:Conduct detailed due diligence on prospective ARS managers, assessing their strategies, performance, risk management practices, and operational capabilities.Support the preparation of comprehensive investment recommendations for the Managing Director and investment committees.Maintain strong relationships with external managers to ensure ongoing alignment and effective communication.Portfolio Monitoring and Reporting:Oversee the performance and risk monitoring of the ARS portfolio, ensuring adherence to investment guidelines and risk limits.Conduct regular reviews of manager performance, identifying areas for improvement or reallocation.Provide detailed reporting and analysis to the Managing Director and investment committee, highlighting key insights and performance trends.Team Leadership and Development:Mentor and guide junior team members, fostering their professional growth and enhancing the team’s collective expertise in ARS investing.Delegate tasks effectively, ensuring team members are engaged in meaningful work while meeting program goals.Collaborate with team members to develop and refine processes for manager evaluation, portfolio monitoring, and reporting.Collaboration Across Teams:Work closely with internal stakeholders, including risk, compliance, operations, and legal teams, to ensure seamless integration of ARS strategies within the broader portfolio.Facilitate cross-functional projects, such as improving risk management frameworks or enhancing due diligence processes, to support the ARS program’s operational excellence.Operational Efficiency and Process Improvement:Identify and implement opportunities to streamline workflows, improve data management, and enhance the efficiency of ARS operations.Partner with the technology and analytics teams to develop tools that improve portfolio monitoring, performance attribution, and reporting capabilities.Qualifications8-10 years of experience in alternative investments, with a focus on Absolute Return Strategies or similar asset classes.Bachelor’s degree in finance, engineering, business, or a related field; an advanced degree (Masters, MBA, CFA, or equivalent) is strongly preferred.Strong understanding of ARS strategies, including market-neutral, global macro, managed futures, and event-driven approaches.Experience in manager due diligence, portfolio monitoring, and risk assessment within an institutional context.Familiarity with alternative investment structures, fee models, and operational best practices.Preference for experience in running an absolute return strategy (e.g., CTA, Systematic Macro, L/S Equity)Proven ability to manage complex implementation projects, including capital allocation, manager onboarding, and portfolio rebalancing.Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Proficiency in developing and using investment analysis software, portfolio construction, and risk management tools.Strong command of data analysis and development of reporting tools to support portfolio monitoring and decision-making.Preference for some experience in developing code (Python).Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop junior team members, fostering a positive and collaborative team culture.Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and external managers.Results-oriented, proactive, and adaptable, with a focus on driving outcomes and continuous improvement.High level of integrity and professionalism, with a commitment to maintaining fiduciary responsibility and accountability.Passionate about investments and motivated to contribute to the success of the ARS program.As one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans, our people-first culture is at its best when our workforce reflects the communities we live and work — and the members we proudly serve.
