Principal, EHS (Environmental Health & Safety)

The Principal, EHS (Environment, Health and Safety), manages a significant aspect or component of environmental programs. This position serves as a technical expert in the specialty area and provides interpretation of applicable laws and guidelines, including consultation and training. Establish EHS requirements, policies, SOP’s & best practices, and regulatory compliance evaluations.  Collaborate with senior management to integrate EHS into business operations.  Responsible for regulatory updates & deployment, EHS SME, represent EHS in various forums that include regulatory and government agencies, internal & external audits, compliance issues action planning & resolution.  Owns and support EHS and operational KPIs, long range plan (LRP), and construction projects permitting procurement, Business Continuity Plan (BCP), Corporate Social Responsibility including Sustainability initiatives, and other strategic EHS Global Projects

Main Duties and Responsibilities include: 

Regulations: Ensure compliance with existing and new EH&S federal, state and local regulations.   Define mechanisms to maintain a compliance level in all EHS programs. Standardize best management practices.   Develop new programs and provide support on site implementation changes as necessary. Administer EHS programs and procedures; administer local, State, and Federal guidelines applicable to the site; stay current on emerging industry trends and incorporate changes/updates to site specific programs. May consult with industrial professional groups, legal regulatory requirements support experts, or EHS professional consultants to stay current of trends and issues to provide an assertive EHS technical expertise and guidance. Ensure the site is operating in compliance with all applicable environmental, health and safety regulations and requirements as codified state and federal OSHA regulations or otherwise referenced (typically through a site audit, gap analysis, and closure process). Participate in/lead EHS gap analysis, audits and inspections developing remediation plans as needed. Serve as an SME in EHS permits/licenses/authorizations procurement processes. Follow up and supervise these permits/licenses/authorizations to ensure the site demonstrates compliance with them. Environmental Programs: Assists with the implementation of EHS management systems at the site level.  Establish efficient methods to keep all environmental data accurate, auditable and accessible. Monitor and analyze environmental programs data. Be involved in the investigation and report of all environmental events (spills, emissions, unauthorized discharges). Agencies:  Interface with EH&S regulatory agencies. Be recognized as a subject matter expert with external agencies and EHS peers. Prepare for and conduct inspections with external Agencies representative, if needed.  Provide assistant prepare reports, and responses to inquiries for regulatory Agencies. Conduct site’s regulatory program monitoring. Prepare Presentations, Strategies, Training and Procedures: Develop documents to improve the EHS onsite programs, and sustainability. Develop and implement training programs based on business objectives and needs. Implement & document procedures/policies for PRMO Operations.  Develop educational materials based on new regulations and/or initiatives to enhance the EHS culture. KPIs: Analyzes and develops environmental health and safety information reporting, consolidating and reporting key EHS statistics monthly, quarterly or annually, as required by outside agencies. Projects: Determine EHS regulatory impact of new operations/processes/capital projects upon onsite programs.  Develop program changes necessary to support business objectives. Analyze existing and future processes to identify cost-effective solutions to reduce EH&S risks and exposure.   Support new project validation process by promoting the use of a Pre-safety and/or Safety Evaluations standardized forms. Review site’s building designs and/or workplace process/procedures for moderately complex facilities for EHS concerns and other opportunities such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits and sustainability initiatives.  At times will be involved in the review of process changes challenges and new projects implementation to ensure they are safe and environmentally sound in compliance with EH&S regional programs and/or best practices are in place to reduce risks and exposure. Promote and be involved in Sustainability Projects (reducing carbon footprint, energy efficiency, water management, waste reduction) and environmental certifications such as Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL), Energy Star, etc.  Internal Auditing: Implement programs for conducting periodic audits and inspections. Conduct an assessment to determine impact and program effectiveness. Interprets site’s inspection results and recommendations effectively to higher-level administrators; implements inspections recommendations. Ensure corrective actions are implemented as necessary. Develop action plans to site management to close global or internal EHS audit findings.  Supervision: May be responsible for supervising contractors, internships, EHS Technicians and/or other EHS professionals Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Computer literacy (MS Office and related software and applications).  Highly motivated, self-starter, and responsible person. Excellent organization skills, ability to multi-task, and to communicate professionally with individuals at all levels.    Ability to establish tools and ways of working to ensure accurate and timely follow-up and on-time deliverables. Possess strong analytical skills and manage multiple priorities while meeting stringent deadlines  Strong technical writing and presentation skills Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Experience:

Ten (10) years of experience developing and supporting EHS management programs.      Environmental subject matter expertise and certifications.  Broad knowledge in EPA, DNER and OSHA regulations (29CFR1910) and Construction (29CFR1926) Standards, ANSI, ASME, NFPA, NEC among others. 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental sciences, industrial hygiene, or other related life sciences required.  Advanced / graduate degrees strongly preferred.
