Barrows STEM Academy.Charles H. Barrows STEM Academy is a regional Pre-K through 8thgrade magnet school in northeastern Connecticut operated by Windham Public Schools. With a curricular focus on the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, students gain important cognitive and academic skills, enhancing their ability to think critically, solve complex problems and work collaboratively.The state-of-the-art, 83,700-sq.-ft school is sited on a sheltering hillside to take full advantage of solar energy. All carefully designed laboratories, classrooms and interior spaces are set around a center courtyard where rain-water runoff is channeled into a natural bio-filtration swale. The swale mimics a perennial stream bed and serves as an outdoor classroom. Other outdoor study areas include butterfly and vegetation gardens.Given the unique features of the school and program, applicants should demonstrate an ability to ensure students are able to take full advantage of what this school facility and the academic programs can offer. A successful candidate to lead the Charles H. Barrows STEM academy will be a proven leader who possesses a strong, collaborative leadership style, involves the many stakeholders in decision-making, and ensures all students have the opportunity to learn at high levels. The next leader of C. H. Barrows STEM Academy will be an instructional leader who values the school’s focus on a STEM education and understands the complex needs of an inter-district magnet school. They will build upon the state and national recognitions the school has earned, such as the STEM School of Excellence from the Technology and Engineering Educators Association. He/she will understand the importance of parental engagement and work to ensure that students and families are actively engaged in their school improvement efforts. The next principal will believe that diversity is a strength and will work to ensure the school climate provides an equitable and inclusive approach to all students. In addition, they will work to maximize the contributions of the talented Barrows’ staff in support of our amazing students. Qualifications: Intermediate Administrator & Supervisor certification (092); minimum of five years’ experience as an elementary principal, middle school principal or a K-8 Principal (principal or assistant principal) experience is required. Five years teaching background in math and/or science is preferred. Demonstrated leadership in a STEM setting highly desired. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; proven organizational abilities; technology expertise; strong collaborative leadership style; experience with inquiry based learning and Connecticut Common Core Standards; demonstrated record of high student achievement and rigor; bilingual preferred.
