About the Role

 

The Principal Carbon forms an essential part of the Carbon Team within BHP’s Commercial Function. Our purpose: enable a real impact in climate change through carbon market while creating social and commercial value. The successful candidate will realise this purpose through their key responsibilities which include funneling investment opportunities to originate carbon offset projects and once signed; to manage origination contracts and project milestones/delivery of the offsets to BHP for voluntary and/or regulatory purposes.

 

This role will have the opportunity to directly influence BHP’s decarbonisation efforts in Australia.  The role is based in one of BHP’s Australian offices, preference for either Perth or Brisbane offices.

 

Key accountabilities: 

 

•    Develops, implements and coordinates BHP’s strategy around the origination of carbon offsets and regulatory credits in alignment with the carbon offset strategy 
•    Provides in-depth knowledge of Australian Safeguard Mechanism and ACCUs scheme to support business decisions
•    Identifies, develops and manages carbon offset origination project opportunities in Australia 
•    Conduct technical due diligence on origination projects including visiting sites to identify potential risks and upside
•    Leads the end-to-end origination of carbon projects whilst successfully collaborating with BHP Functional teams to ensure BHP’s key objectives are met
•    Develops and manages the required internal approvals for all origination activities 
•    Risk manages the carbon offset offtake portfolio including tracking the performance of origination projects and managing the counterparties
•    Provides support to internal carbon origination activities in BHP owned or managed land
•    Participates in industry associations and forums in relation to carbon offset activities, including but not limited to track developments/nuances in relevant carbon schemes and methodological updates for BHP.
•    Establish high quality internal and external stakeholder relationships and networks, including but not limited to project proponents, project developers, technical vendors, auditing bodies, standard bodies, relevant regulators, etc.

About You

 


•    Bachelor’s degree and/or extensive practical/technical experience in the carbon industry specifically on projects generating carbon offsets through various crediting mechanisms
•    Work experience in originating and managing carbon offset projects is required, with a preference for candidates having direct experience in projects from the inception including identifying opportunities (land, methodology, etc.), registering the project, design/implementation of eligible sequestration or emission reduction activities, stakeholder or interest holder engagement, project documentation, audit process and through to the issuance of carbon credits.
•    Practical experience/knowledge to review project-specific topics, including but not limited to project risks (practical, implementation, counterparty, regulatory, etc.), cost/economics assumptions, etc.
•    In-depth knowledge of the Australian Safeguard Mechanism and ACCU scheme including offset methodologies, both nature-based solutions as well as industrial solutions is required.
•    Able to perform independent Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM) modelling, including reviewing against counterparty-specific assumptions to build BHP’s view on yield projections and any associated risk/variation. 
•    Existing relationships with offset providers, project originators, project proponents and/or intermediaries such as traders, service providers, etc. is required
•    Knowledge of international carbon offset trading schemes and regulations, with preference for those markets that BHP operates and markets in, is preferred
•    A naturally curious individual that is able to apply strategic thinking to solve complex business problems
•    Possesses project planning and execution skills that enable identification and prioritization of critical work and able to independently lead large streams of work and manage associated risks
•    Evidences high level of commercial and business acumen 
•    Experienced in engaging effectively with and influencing executive-level stakeholders
•    Ability to build trustful relationships and communication effectively across multiple levels
