If you havent yet applied for a role at Synnovis, please hurry, the closing date for this role is 06/10/22 and it would be great if you could join us on the next stage of our exciting transformation journey This post represents an exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC registered Clinical Scientist to join the senior operational and scientific management team at the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub (SEGLH) based at Synnovis, Guys Hospital. The postholder will assist the Operational Lead(s), deputise in their absence and will have overall responsibility for the day to day management of a subsection of the Developmental Disorders team and will lead and manage a team of healthcare scientists to deliver high quality genomic services for the detection of copy number variants in the postnatal and prenatal setting and for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. They will be expected to work with closely with the other deputy operations leads. Main duties of the job The post holder will have up-to-date and detailed specialist knowledge and understanding of diagnostic genetic testing. They will perform a highly complex role and be responsible for continuously developing clinical and scientific practice within a defined field. They will maintain the daily diagnostic service and participate in the development of new tests and technologies ensuring validation is performed according to ISO15189 standards, implementing new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and reviewing/updating/authorising existing SOPs on a regular basis using the laboratory document management system (Q-Pulse). They will check and authorise diagnostic clinical reports, providing specialist advice and guidance to service users and other members of staff when required. They will be responsible for ensuring service work is carried out to a high standard and reports are issued within clinically relevant turnaround times. They will manage a team of clinical scientists and technical staff overseeing the training, development and competency assessment for these staff. Working for our organisation The Synnovis Genetics Laboratory has been designated the hub laboratory for the SEGLH Network to provide the new National Genomic Medicine Service for NHS England. This network of laboratory providers is responsible for delivering genomic testing to a population of 8.6 million across South London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. SEGLH has been commissioned by NHSE to provide testing for the cardiology, respiratory, skin, gastrohepatology and neurology rare disease specialisms. The SEGLH has invested heavily in developing the very latest, state-of-the art, equipment and assays. This includes high throughput automated equipment supporting a new SNP array platform, a suite of next generation sequencers, including an Illumina NovaSeq, and large NGS gene panels. Data will flow seamlessly from our refurbished laboratories to cloud-based bioinformatics applications for interpretation by a network of clinical scientists. Detailed job description and main responsibilities Duties and ResponsibilitiesOperational Management To contribute to the development and delivery of a clear operational plan, achieving relevant quality and safety standards and activity levels within budget. To participate in the development and delivery of the operational plan for the wider Genetics Service Delivery Unit. To provide the Operational Leads with regular progress reports on the delivery of an accurate, modern and efficient diagnostic service. To support the Operation Leads in ensuring that relevant operating procedures and standards are met, ensuring are compliant with ISO 15189 guidelines. To monitor the quality and efficiency of service delivery, through internal quality control and audit. To implement measures for cost improvement and cost effectiveness. To be responsible for HR management, including recruitment and appraisals of relevant staff. To perform and review risk assessments. To ensure that the training and education needs of staff are met, in cooperation with the Operation Leads and Genetics Training Manager. Participate in the departmental audit programmes, academic seminars, group support meetings and journal clubs To deputise for the Operation Leads in their absence. To participate in the quality and efficiency of service delivery, through internal quality control, clinical audit, local audit and national audit activities including UK National External Quality Assurance/CEQAS.Clinical Service Provision To provide high level expertise in the analysis of samples from patients referred for copy number variant analysis. To be responsible for the final check and authorisation of postnatal, prenatal and PGD reports for copy number variation. Provide advice to scientists and clinicians on best practice, patient diagnosis and prognosis relating to the tests listed in 2.Research and Development To participate in the development and application of novel clinically validated tests. Experience of analysis, interpretation and writing clinical diagnostic reports for microarray Wide experience of both commonly used and specialised laboratory techniques, including troubleshooting.Desirable criteria Experience of analysis and interpretation of SNVs and other mutations detected by molecular diagnostics including NGS. Experience of authorising clinical diagnostic reports for one of more of the following areas: karyotype, chromosome breakage or QF-PCR. Experience of performing health and safety and quality audits. Skills & KnowledgeEssential criteria Knowledge and understanding of the aetiology of genetic abnormalities including aneuploidy, copy number changes and chromosome rearrangements. Knowledge of the phenotypes associated with recurrent copy number changes and fragile X Knowledge of the requirements for day-to-day running of a diagnostic laboratory.Desirable criteria Up to date technical knowledge of molecular cytogenetic diagnostic tests including microarray and NGS Knowledge of the full range molecular aetiologies contributing to human genetic disease. Experience in the use of Genomics Decision Support Software, genome browsers and other genomics analytical/interpretation software.
